Some how, some way, this is Matt Stajan's fault.

Fack.

Oh well, gives him a chance to get cybernetic implants in his knee, which should serve to help him elevate his play beyond that of a 4th liner on a non-playoff team.

So, this is great news.

Listening to FAN 960, Loubo and Steinberg didn't paint a good picture of the incident. They said that he looked quite laboured in his attempts to get off the ice. Then they said that it could be nothing because they thought Scott Hannan's career was done last year when he got hurt in a game but didn't miss the next game.

Also planned is a discussion about the importance of civic engagement, the accessibility of food trucks, and Plan It Calgary.

I'm actually OK with this.

If Hartley (the same guy that coached Tanguay, Hejduk and Drury in their rookie seasons) truly believes Sven needs to spend some time watching the game, then an injury may be the best chance for that to take place. No PR disaster from scratching him, no "cause for concern" in regards to his confidence. Sven on the 4th line isn't going to make or break (or even affect) this club in any way, so we won't even notice him missing.

As long as he comes back having learned whatever Hartley thinks he needs to learn, and is ready to take a place on the top two lines, then I welcome this injury.

(I know it's harsh to say "I welcome this injury" and I'd never wish something bad on Sven, I'm just saying this may be a blessing in disguise for both his career and our current season.)

I think Hartley's reason behind Sven's low ice time is trying to get him acclamated to everything going on outside of hockey.. before he can focus on his career. Which makes sense, I guess.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath when people are missing from practice, especially in a shortened season...for a lot of players there are going to be "maintenance days" that might pop up with more frequency.

Let's wait to hear if it's otherwise for Cervenka and players in the future.

Ugh Butler back in.

I'm not that worried. Butler will not be seeing top 4. He will get 10 minutes of ice time against weak competition on the bottom pairing. This is where he needed to start his career when the trade was made for him. He needs to be traded because no matter where he plays fans are going to hate him.

My only issue with him back in is that Smith played a good game against the oilers. Should Smith not be rewarded for something like that?

I don't think Butler is as bad as some think on CP.He is a bottom pairing d-man.

My only concern is Hartely's "competitive situation" that he wants. Smith played good the last 2 games and as a reward is getting the pressbox. What happens if Butler plays great against the Av's? Do they send him to the press box so Anton can come in and keep the "competitive situation" going? Players should not be taken out of the line up when they play well. They should be taken out when they play poorly. Butler was bad the last game he played and should not be given a chance back in until a player plays bad or gets injured.

Unless one of the three are going to prove too good to sit out, the competitive rotation will be between Brodie, Butler and Smith... heck, when Babchuck is back you can add his name to the mix...

Geez... Brodie, Butler, Babchuck... Backlund, Bouwmeester, Baertschi and Begin... why don't the Flames just change their logo to a flaming B? They can change some names too... Biginla, Bammalleri, Birving, Bhudler, Banguay,

Please Hartley don't pair him with Bouwmeester.

kehatch

Hartley paired Giordano with Bouwmeester when it wasn't working. He certainly isn't going to split that pair to have a guy that was a healthy scratch the last two games play on the top pairing.

You will probably see Babchuk rotate with Sarich and Butler rotate with Smith. If Brodie falters he gets added to the rotation. Players will likely rotate based on play.

Geez... Brodie, Butler, Babchuck... Backlund, Bouwmeester, Baertschi and Begin... why don't the Flames just change their logo to a flaming B? They can change some names too... Biginla, Bammalleri, Birving, Bhudler, Banguay,

Maybe they can't pronounce the letter C

I am more concerned when a guy has an injury history with the same injury. He has had a concussion, a neck injury, and now a hip flexor.

The later two likely being more to him just not being 100% physically ready to be an everyday pro-player at his stature yet.

^This^ is how you spot someone who's never heard of Anders Eriksson.

Eriksson was a disaster..... but at 21 minutes a game for 61 games he was not a 5/6 defenseman.

The Flames were able to make the playoffs with Eriksson playing 21 minutes

"I was skating and my left skate seemed to have caught a rut in the ice and my legs kind of went into a splits position," Baertschi said. "I felt pain immediately and left the ice to have it checked. It’s very disappointing to learn that it’s a hip flexor injury that will keep me out of the line-up.

"I’ve started treatments and plan on working very hard at getting back to 100% as quickly as possible so I can help our team be successful and win games."

Great way to burn the first year of his contract. An absolute waste.

Not sure what the heck you're talking about (as usual.) Baertschi is losing a year off his contract if he played in the AHL or the NHL.

When people talking about burning a year off a player's deal they are talking about 18 or 19 year olds playing junior and whether they should stay in the NHL and use up a year of their entry level deal or not. Once they are 20 and playing pro hockey they have to use up a year of their deal so it is completely irrelevant to the discussion.

What's unfortunate is that he caught a rut in the ice. Burning years off his contract has absolutely nothing to do with anything here.

Once again you flout your ignorance.

that hate on for fourth liners on this site is amazing to me ...

they are fourth liners!

6-7 dmen and 12-13 forwards are going to make mistakes, shoot the puck wide, take the puck in and not create a whole lot.

if they didn't they'd be too expensive to play on the fourth line!

All I want from my fourth liners is to skate the puck behind the opposition net and then hold the puck against the boards with their skate for 45 seconds.

Is that too much to ask?!

So, Millions is trying to make this out to be some kind of conspiracy?

I'd say it's more likely that Jarome asked Sven if he tweaked his knee, Sven said no and pointed at his hip flexor and Jarome assumed it was a groin injury.

I know we all think Jarome can do anything, but I'm sure he's not a doctor.

2 weeks in the press box watching the team play.

Feaster announces Baertschi will spend 2 weeks on a conditioning stint in the AHL.

By the time he's ready to come back and play they will know a lot better if they are playoff bound or lottery selecting in the draft.

To me I think they are terrified to bench him due to the negative flack they are going to take especially when Iginla fails to score even 10 goals this year.

All of the hockey analysts that were watching the practice said they saw nothing at all. He skated off the ice fine.

I can't believe you seriously believe this. I mean, really? The Flames (or maybe the Owners...ooohhhhhhh, not the big bad owners!) told Sven to go out in practice, fake an injury and lie to the media just so they can send him down to the AHL for two weeks? Get a grip, the team doesn't give a crap about what any of us think - not that that is a bad thing, it is their money and jobs on the line.

Winning games is the only thing that really matters, and the guys that paid lots of money to make that decision make that decision. Not a bunch of guys on CP, or reporters. If sending Sven to the AHL helps the team win, they do it. If playing him helps them win, they do it. Good grief.

Most hip flexor injuries wouldn't be week to week they would be talking 4-6 weeks as a starting point.

They even pointed it out on the fan the timing of the injury was just a little bizarre considering the circumstances.

Either way the kids season is shot they are better off sending him down to the AHL even if and when he does recover so they don't blow his rookie year.

There's more conspiracy theories in here than a combo 9/11 Ilumminati board.

A hip flexor injury pretty much *is* a groin injury. I mean, close enough that casual talking about it by teammates they could easily refer to it as such.

If it's a bit of a strain, a week or two could easily be enough. If it's more serious then sure it could take 4-6, but unless someone meets up with his MRI tech at the Orange Julius in Market Mall the rest is all silly speculation IMO.
