It is rumored that NHL Centre Ice will be on a free preview until January 31st and that subscribers will pay around $50 for the shortened season.

I called Shaw yesterday and they didn't have the details yet.

Does anyone know more about it?

man, rumour here in ON is that Rogers isn't allowing CI purchase on it's own, and that you need to subscribe to the sportspack (~ $30/month) to get CI.

That would frigin suck. I usually do get the sportspack as it allows me to watch any NHL and NFL game i want. But with the NFL being done, 30/month is WAY too much.

so, the NHL gives back by discounting Centre Ice to $50 dollars aka by 50%.....for 50% of the games....

Actually, sounds like a 75% discount for 59% of the games.

Per "season game", it's about $1.02, vs about $2.50 in past years.

Really? I just signed up about 2 weeks ago and it was 2. I haven't used either yet, but I'm assuming I would just rent and it would come off my bill as a credit?

Oh and as for NHL Centre Ice, there is going to be a Flames game on almost every other night as it is, so that's already a lot of hockey. Good deal though for the package this season.

I think most were dropping the GameCenter throw-in that was present in previous years. I found a forum thread from a different site from back in September where people were upset the carriers were all dropping it.

actually an interesting question... i would assume there would be some sort of detection of where the dish is, and it would detect it not being in the right province/city and not even work, but not sure how that would actually function.

You need either one of the newer black Motorola DCX boxes or the Arris Gateway. The old DCT series and (I believe) all the Pace boxes won't work. Shaw did at some point offer free or highly subsidized swaps of older boxes to the MPEG-4 boxes to CI subscribers, not sure if they do now. Shaw did at some point offer free or highly subsidized swaps of older boxes to the MPEG-4 boxes to CI subscribers, not sure if they do now. I'd call them if you plan to subscribe, maybe they can do something for you.

Yup you have to have a MPEG-4 box to have center ice. They change it for free if you call them. At least they did last year.

Yup. Upgraded my downstairs box for free. Even though I bought the out dated box 2 years ago.

Do you mind me asking which outlet? I just spoke with Shaw over the phone and the best the gentleman would offer me is a $100 credit off of the purchase price of each new box (ie $350 to $250 per box). I have two old DCT boxes that would need to be upgraded.

Question for you tv experts, I may be moving to BC soon from Calgary , not trying to be shady or ask ilegally which I might be , in that case please just let me know.

Say I have satellite, either Bell or Shaw Direct, and I install the dish in Vancouver but don't call the company , will I continue to get the flames/oilers sportsnet games ? Is this highly illegal or just a bit shady. Does anyone do it?

I don't think it's illegal but maybe shady. I had Bell satellite when I moved to BC from Calgary and informed them that I moved. They even sent me a new dish and changed my billing address but they never changed my dish location, so I was receiving Alberta hockey programming. I didn't even know that Bell used two addresses but I never complained because I understood that it was a win for me. The only problem was that all my programming was an hour off and this was a bother. This changed when I upgraded to HD and Bell went to the Calgary address to upgrade my dish. I've since ordered Centre Ice to satisfy my hockey needs. So yeah technically, but maybe not legally you can have Bell in Calgary and than set up your own dish in BC, don't tell them of your address change and continue to receive Calgary programming as the programming is associated with your receiver.

I don't know how Shaw Direct does their programming though but I know many snowbirds take their receivers south with them to watch Canadian TV. This doesn't work well with Bell because their new satellites are spotlighted to cover only Canada and the border states.

One other consideration is that is your new BC location compatible with satellite TV. What I mean is are their trees or buildings blocking your view of the satellites?

Just tell them that all your friends got the free upgrade. If that does not work then threaten to move to telus. They normally cave when you tell them you are going to change to the competitor.

It will take a while. They will probably send you up the chain of command .

It was blacked out because it was on one of the NBC channels. I was watching it for a bit earlier.

I had Centre Ice for the full season last year. In my opinion I don't think it's worth it. Random games are blacked out from time to time, and there are times when games don't show up in the guide, but untitled on one of the "Sports Packages". Maybe that's just been my experience, but with the variety of ways to watch online, I'll pass

Just talked to technician, and FYI for anyone else having this issue, our HD Pvr boxes are too old and cant process Mpeg-4 channels. I ordered a new box that has the proper capabilities for $350, or $10 added to your monthly bill for 36 months.

So I'm watching the game on GameCentre in hopes that I can replace cable. The quality of the video is good and I've given it a chance to buffer a little. When the feed zooms into a player it looks great.

The issue I'm having is that the action part of the stream is a little jerky. When the puck moves on a shot/pass it looks horrible and even when the players are skating it can be jerky.

We have good (Shaw) Internet and are running it through Apple TV which is hard wired to our router.

Could this be a product of the feed being too much for my Internet connection or (hopefully) it's a setting on my TV (I have a Samsung with 1080p). Could it be that I have it set for 720 and the feed is in 1080 and that's causing the jerky puck? I do not have this problem with movies, cable, games, etc.

Any help is appreciated.

So just subscribed to NHL CI with Novus here in BC, apparently my PVR is outdated so I won't get HD games unless I update my PVR. This is frustrating since I've had HD games the past few years. They'll provide me with a temp receiver for 6 months, but after that I'll need to spend $250+ on a new receiver to get HD games next season.

Anyone else have this issue with Shaw? I did some searching and it sounds like people were upgraded to new receivers in 2010 with Shaw when ordering NFL Sunday ticket or NHL CI.

Yup, I started a thread about it in tech form. There are also some other HD channels that use mpeg4 as well that will be blacked out. My concern is the new shaw HDPVR (3510) has some really bad reviews... I might hold out until the glitches are fixed via updates as opposed to buying the previous model (3400). The 3510 has some new features including a totally different guide, but apparently there is quite a bit of lag loading and scrolling the guide.

So here is a question I have. I live in Vancouver and subscribe to Centre Ice so I can watch every Flames game. I have had countless arguments and lengthy phone calls with Shaw and can't be bothered to call them about this, I know they won't do anything anyway. But it is annoying and I was wondering if others found it annoying too.

The issue is that Centre Ice this year cuts off right after the game broadcast is over. So when Sportsnet is showing the game it cuts off just before Sportsnet Connected starts. This is not a big deal, and I actually used to be surprised when the Centre Ice channel would continue playing Sportsnet West well into Sportsnet Connected.
However, when I turn to Sportsnet West which I pay for as well (as one of the out of market Sportsnet channels) the blackout for the game is still in effect. So I can not watch the Flames-centric Sportsnet Connected show (I know it isn't the best anyway but better than mins. of what the Canucks did on their off day).

It is really a minor issue, but if they have the ability to cut off the Centre Ice channel immediately as the broadcast ends they should be able to restart the other channel just as quickly. It takes quite a while sometimes.

Anyone else annoyed by this? Anyone know if it is the same issue with other providers or not?

I couldn't get any games to connect until 8:30 MST, then it was streaming at quite high resolution but very choppy. My brain kinda hurts after watching that frame rate.

I'm with Bell TV and I haven't noticed this problem this year although in other years it's been a problem. As soon as the CI HD broadcast was over I switched to SNW HD and didn't notice any blackout but I was running maybe a minute delay on my PVR. SNW is only blocking out 2 1/2 hrs per game now instead of the old practise of 3 hrs.

My biggest complaint is having to watch the Canucks broadcast when we play them.
