Big Red Buttons

What do the big red buttons do on the Forum home page (beside each forum heading)?

Two things actually. They communicate if there are threads that you haven't read yet in that forum by being solid red or faded out. They also mark every thread in a forum read if you click on them.

ah, thnx ... I thought they did something like that - but since they are big red buttons, I presumed they would have great far-reaching implications ...
