If you look closely, he's actually wearing a clear itech (full) cage instead of a wire cage. Only time I've ever seen it.
The reason he's wearing that is because prior to the Olympics, he and Burke had both been wearing the cage style masks that most goalies wear now (but were rare outside of North America yet). Canada had been playing really well in the pre-tournament games, and both Moog and Burke were really strong in goal.

About a week before the Olympics started, one of the other teams (I think it was Sweden, but that could be wrong) complained to the IIHF that the eye holes on their masks were too large and violated an obscure IIHF equipment rule that was generally never enforced that required the eye holes to be small enough that a stick blade couldn't accidentally go through the gap and injure the goalie's eye.

Because that style of mask was still relatively rare, there weren't any cages available that would pass the IIHF standard, and they didn't have enough time to get ones made. This forced them to wear the helmet and cage style masks that most European goalies were still wearing at the time. Burke went with the standard wire mesh cage, but Moog decided to go with the Itech. It didn't work well because it kept fogging up during the game, which is also likely why no other goalie ever did it.

It's hard to know how much it affected their games, but any little bit may have been enough to keep them off the podium.

Looking at all these awesome looking masks. Is there an equipment rule whereby the goalies can not go back to the old school style masks?

I've read that it's more a matter of the hybrid cage/mask being safer than the full-on mask (absorbing the shock of impact better, or something). I like the look of the full-on mask better (gives the goalie more of an air of menace, each mask had more individuality and there's more canvas to paint on), but I can accept the safety argument.

I can too. I mean I also played the position but never facing slapshots well over 100 miles an hour. I'm just thinking with all of the things we invent maybe something could be designed that's just as safe as the hybrid and if that's possible would it still be legal by NHL measures?

Not sure about safety, but I'm guessing you're right. I read one of the big issues with the old school masks was vision -- specifically, not being able to look downwards and see the puck at your feet (which lead to the helmet/cage combo and eventually the current mask that is used today). I'm sure comfort is also a factor.

Of course, love the photo though. Incidently, last year I helped coach a minor hockey team with Ron Sutter. Ron was telling us a story, because he sat beside Hextall where Hextall would place his equipment on the floor all laid out. Then Hextall would basically rock back and forth and just get himself all worked up. The fella's would wind him up even more by moving his blocker or glove. One of the funniest stories listenning to Sutter tell it.

Judging by the equipment, that's from the 1980s. Of the Flames goalies who wore #1 in the 80s, Pat Riggin was right-handed shot, and Don Edwards wore a white helmet and square cage.

Regarding Lester Patrick, I'm sure many people know this story already...

Patrick is famous for an incident which occurred during the Stanley Cup finals of 1928. At the age of 44 years, 3 months, 9 days, while serving as coach and general manager of the Rangers, Patrick inserted himself into the April 8 playoff game to play goal against the Montreal Maroons, when starting goaltender Lorne Chabot suffered an eye injury after being hit by the puck in the second period. This is a record for the oldest goalie to play in the Stanley Cup Finals that still stands today. At the time it was not common for teams to have a backup goaltender, and the opposing team's coach had to allow a substitute goaltender. However the Maroon's manager-coach Eddie Gerard refused to give permission for the Rangers to use Alec Connell, the Ottawa Senator's star netminder who was in the stands, as well as minor-leaguer Hugh McCormick. Odie Cleghorn, the then-coach of the Pittsburgh Pirates, stood in for Patrick as coach for the remainder of the game, and directed the Rangers to check fiercely at mid-ice which limited the Maroon players to long harmless shots. Patrick allowed one goal in helping the Rangers to an overtime victory. For the next three games, the league gave permission for the Rangers to use Joe Miller from the New York Americans in goal. The Rangers went on to win the Stanley Cup.

He was a defenceman for most of his career. I believe that was the only game he ever played goal.

I was hoping to guess someone else in here so I could post Frose, but everyone was either too fast or I had no idea who the goalies were haha. Anyways.

I don't see it - Hextall stepped in right after and was an elite goaltender in the league winning the Vezina and being a main reason that the Flyers made the finals the next year.

Oh nothing against Hextall at all. He ended up winning the Conne Smythe in 87 as well I believe. I just know my Dad believes Pelle was THAT good.

Centomo I had research it for a while.

Of course you are correct on Frank McCool and a great hockey name for sure. Hate playing at the arena named after him though, surprised no one has been injured stepping onto that ice. You almost need to tied off with safety straps.

Looks a whole lot like our Goalie Coach Clint Malarchuk?

Not in very good shape. I remember seeing this replayed on TV over and over. Then minor hockey mandated neck guards, and no turtle necks did not pass.

I unfortunately remember that, and thinking I'd never step on the ice without a neck guard. Some sicko I guess decided to commemorate the event with a custom McFarlane figure:
