so has anyone else caught the first 2 episodes of this show on HBO? i was little hesitant since usually anything with the 3 main Seinfeld actors not named Jerry usually flops, but so far this show is funny as hell and Julia Louis Dreyfus does a great job (and for 51 looks smoking). the cast is excellent (Arrested Development and Upright Citizen's Brigade connections) and the writing is very sharp. highly recommended

early reviews are very strong as well: http://www.tvfanatic.com/2012/04/veep-review-second-in-command-first-in-funny/

Not to dis credit Veep, but has HBO ever not renewed a show past Season One.

I know Luck was cancelled this year, but that was due to another issue. They had renweed Luck for Season 2 before all the controversy surfaced.

I'm sure I'm missing one, but I can't think of a HBO show that was cancelled after S1

There has been a bunch of episodes on the last 2 days and i'm getting a lot of laughs out of this.

Hilarious line I recently heard from the veep. Doing something (which i can't remember) is like using a fkn croissant for a dildo, It doesn't work and it's messy.

Liking this show.

Anyone still watching? The last episode was amazing, the debate with the rolling commentary from other characters had my gut hurting. The Clovis episode was also gold, with Mike freaking out about the "meatingmeyer.com" website before it even showed up on the projector. Really like all the quick jokes that you really have to pay attention to get, reminds me of Arrested Development that way

I really like this show. JLD is very convincing in her role, you don't think of her as 'oh it's Elaine!'

Sometimes the politics and gladhanding and bs gets so ramped up, it actually makes me nervous, haha. I'd hate to work in that world.

I loved the part with Jonah the week previous visiting Dan in the hospital.

You know what, I bet it is really like that in politics too. Gotta be so good in front of the public and cameras, and then it all gets let down in the tense parts behind the scenes. Plus too, it's still much more male dominated than most other jobs and places in society, and that tends to add to a bit more crudeness. And often the women having to engage in over the top 'male' behaviour just to fit in, and then it just becomes part of them too.

I was watching an interview from one of the cast members on some show, forget where, and they said they get countless comments about how so much is so true to life. Oh, I know I Dan, oh I know a Jonah!

Just finished the first season based on the recommendations here and the critical acclaim... And to be honest, I really disliked it.

There wasn't a single character on the show I liked. Tony Hale's character came closest in that I didn't actually dislike him, but everyone else was just a swirl of constant negativity, smarminess, arrogance, etc.

Is there a change of tone in the second season? If not, I'm going to tap out and move on.

I've liked the show since the start, but it's only gotten better with each season. Writing and dialog is much better now and they're at the point of Arrested Development style rapid fire jokes where repeated viewings can help you catch a lot of stuff you missed the first time

I've gotten a few people hooked on this show but it's not a huge feat since it practically sells itself. I watched Executive Decision (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116253/) the other day and I imagined the Veep on the plane saying, "Look at what you got me into now!"

I would say you both have points. I did think the second season was better too. Better jokes and more of them. Better tie ins to reality or parody/satire bits. But it is more of the same of the first season. It doesn't really change it's tone or message. It's part of the reason the characters can be so hated. They're supposed to be! They are conniving, ass-kissing, politicians and staffers that only care about their own career advancement.

You might like it (MikeF) if you allow yourself to hate the characters and yet see some of the truth in the system and even in the human condition. On the other hand I can see why a person would get frustrated with it. There are times I feel almost tired after watching an episode. I couldn't imagine living a life like that. Being so busy kissing ass or trying to take someone down. Letting go of all your morals just to win the game or promotion. It's a fast paced show that has a lot of horrible things in it. But it's supposed to.

So much crashing down on the president and everyone around her this season. The last episode with the deposition was absolute gold, the congressman listing all the nicknames that Dan had for Jonah almost had me in tears. And I'm not sure who the actor is playing the idiotic assistant to Jonah, but he deserves a lot more recognition

"Please raise your right hand...no, that's your left"

The Thick of It was a great UK show but what's even better is the movie based on that show called "In the Loop." Check it out although it may require multiple viewings; the jokes are pretty rapid-fire and you miss a lot of them initially.

Veep, as an American remake , is very well done and holds the spirit of the original quite well.

I think my favorite joke of the whole series is when they're at the tech firm with Cra'ig and Selina asks her "Smarch" to bring up the website meetmeyer.com (which it changes to meatmeyer.com), and Mike freaks out before anything even loads. It's so quick and subtle, but fits his character so well. Of course he has a mental directory of all the Selina Meyer porn sites

I've seen a coupe of articles including this one (http://tvline.com/2016/09/19/julia-louis-dreyfus-emmy-race-2017-veep-withdraw/) suggesting JLD should step down and withdraw herself from Emmy contention starting next year to give others a shot at winning. It has been done before.

I dunno, I wasn't pleased when Modern Family won 4 in a row cause I think that show is hot garbage. If you're not a fan of Veep maybe you'd feel the same way about JLD. Modern Family of course did not withdraw, they simply started losing to Veep.

If she's the best, I think she should continue to clean up the category.

What a dumb article. She owes it to her show and colleagues to keep trying to win Emmy's to increase viewership. Stepping down would be disgraceful. She is paid to win Emmy's.

Ironic how the #### show that is the office of Veep and Potus under Selina Myer turns out to be pretty tame when compared to real American politics.
I may start over from the beginning as well. I think I could watch this several times and enjoy it as much each time.

Congressman Jonah Ryan might be the funniest thing in the history of television.

Congrats to Veep on winning best comedy again at the Emmy's last week, and JLD for winning lead actress in a comedy for the sixth time in a row. The bad news: JLD has breast cancer. :(

I have no idea how I had missed this show entirely. I PVR'd the recent re-runs on HBO Canada and binge-watched 5 seasons of it. It is soooooo good and angry and funny and cynical and portraying everything we all know is happening over there in reality. Great cast too!

Does anyone know if I can retrieve and watch some of the missing episodes (Netflix, Prime, Crave)?

P.S. Oh, and Jonah Ryan for President!..

Crave has the entire Veep catalogue. New episodes from Sundays are usually up fairly quickly, but I usually just watch them the next day anyway.

They make you think the show is about Selinas stagnant political career, but it's secretly about Jonah's meteoric rise to the top.

The best scene in Veep is when Jonahs fiance breaks up with him right after he got circumcised, so I think he's earnt it.

I can't believe Selina sold out Gary like that.

The funeral scene was incredible. Catherine not even attending, but making margaritas instead. Andrew was there. Dan has barely aged a day. Montez has had extensive work done. And, of course, Richard is the one who can finally get a Middle East peace deal.

Veep had an amazing run, never dipped in quality, and had a great ending even after JLD's cancer which caused the writers to re-write the whole finale (https://www.vulture.com/2019/05/veep-series-finale.html). Perfect timing too with the GoT writers showing just how lazy and uninterested they were in doing the same

Great final. I was expecting Selena to lose the nomination and have things end with a Veep offer but her getting what she wanted at great cost was a much better conclusion. There were so many funny moments but my favourite was Mike insulting Dan's suit. I also loved seeing Sue again of course.

Now that the funniest show on TV is unfortunately over any thoughts on what the new funniest show is? I would say Silicon Valley if the next season ever gets announced and I also love The Good Place and Rick & Morty. Oh, and What we Do in the Shadows is quickly becoming a favourite.

Finally where do we rank Veep on the list of greatest TV comedies of all time? Considering a criteria of laughs per minute over a multiple season run that didn't overstay its welcome and offered a satisfying conclusion I will go out on a limb and call it the funniest show ever. The only others I think would come close are Curb, Parks and Rec, Futurama, and Peep Show.

It is interesting comparing to GoT. In the case of Veep the showrunner left after 4 seasons but the show was able to transition to a new showrunner and gave us 3 more excellent seasons with a great conclusion. Compare to GoT where Benioff and Weiss stayed on longer than they probably wanted to and ended up rushing the conclusion so they would control it. The ending of GoT could have worked better making a switch after season 6 and letting someone else write another 4 seasons.

Here is an article with another comparison:

https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/05/game-of-thrones-veep-selina-meyer-daenerys-targaryen

Selina Meyer’s downfall was beautifully earned. Daenerys Targaryen’s was a frustrating mess.

I do not recall anything that was as consistently smart/funny over time. Maybe my favorite comedy of all time anyway. Have watched from the start numerous times already.

This NSFW rant from Finale so very on point in showing the brilliance (and the over the top spectacular language/writing) of this series, and why JLD is the female comedy GOAT.

“Trust me: he will never see you as anything other than the T.G.I. Friday’s hostess on Proactiv who lets him bend you over his desk while you close your eyes to avoid coming face-to-face with that framed photo of his family’s trip to Aspen while he drowns your little mermaid back tat in a pool of jizz and admires his own reflection.”

(ps - Also, would be great to limit GOT bashing to the other 4 or 5 threads.)

I think it also depends on how long you give a show. For example, I found that The Office, Parks and Rec, Brooklyn 99, etc (sense a theme?) took a while to find their stride. Parks and Rec is an excellent example, where the first season and a half are trash, but then it becomes phenomenal.

After a long break from watching I binged seasons 3 to 7 over the last couple weeks. I'm not sure why I ever stopped watching. Such a great show. Jonah's rise and ridiculousness was amazing. Congressman Furlong was awesomely crude. All the characters were so well formed for such short seasons.

I finished it this week too. I'm sad to see it go, but they left at the perfect moment IMO after an epic run. Selena's last scene in the oval office was so typical of her character. Would do anything and walk over anyone for a chance to be president, yet alone in the end. Also, poor Gary :(

One of the best comedies ever. Jonah has got to be one of my favorite dbag characters ever.
