Can anyone recommend a decent burr coffee grinder?

Ideally something well-built, compact, and with inoffensive looks....but that doesn't break the bank (so doesn't have to be made of Italian Unobtanium). Sub $200?

This a machine that grinds up beans? 200 bucks?

Yeah, and $200 is on the low end from what I gather. Coffee machinery can get pretty crazy expensive.

Is there a place to buy Bodum products in Calgary? I'm looking for this as a gift, and and in typical fashion left it to the last minute, so online shopping is out.

This one seems to get good reviews.

Yes I do own one and I would recommend it. It doesn't grind espresso super fine but it grinds it fine enough on the second finest setting to choke my machine. What I like alot about it is the accuracy of dosing. It doses shots very accurately between runs. Within a gram of each other.

She pretty much drinks espresso....are there different levels of espresso grind, or superfine what you need for it? Sorry if I sound like a moron about this.

200 bucks seems insane to me. My grinder was $15 at superstore. It has the added function of also busting up my weed.

Haha the weed thing was a joke... But yeah, if coffee is a priority in your life, you're probably right.

I wasn't trying to pick a fight though, just legitimately amazed that a 200 dollar coffee grinder exists. I also honestly doubt it does that much more than my 15 dollar one does to warrant the over 1000% price difference.

But if the wife wants the espresso a certain way... I guess the peripheral benefit is worth it to you.

No worries, it's expensive to me too, but I'm just trying to make someone happy by getting them something of quality that hopefully they can use for many years.

I've been using this one for about 2 years, no problems so far. Use it for french pressing though, not espresso, so I'm not sure how well the "fine" part of the grind is.

Edit: I bought it from that site too, no problems, good delivery/service.

On second thought it says this about the Maestro

The Maestro Plus conical burr grinder is the perfect grinder for the home user hoping to improve their brewed coffee. Although it is capable of achieving an espresso grind, we don't recommend it for espresso due to the wear and tear that espresso is known to have on grinders. It is best suited for brewing drip, french press or Aeropress.

Maybe look at the Virtuoso for $235: https://www.philsebastian.com/shop/merchandise

You can also try:

http://www.cappuccinoking.com/ and,

http://www.mrcappuccino.com/

Both of these are in Calgary and have quality grinders, but don't have prices listed on the website. They likely will have most grinders >$200.

Good luck, I have the Ranchilio Rocky and I enjoy it.

Bodum just came out with a burr grinder, I picked on up for 90 bucks off amazon.

Seems pretty good, grinds it fine enough for espresso.

Although I'm not much of a coffee snob and really have nothing to compare it too.

Thanks for the recommendation guys. The Magic Bullet is great for a lot of things, but it's a blade grinder, so apparently not so good for coffee compared to a Burr Gringer. Don't ask me why....I'm not sure myself. Something about it not grinding it evenly.

Was just watching an episode of Good Eats about coffee brewing and to my surprise Alton Brown recommended a blade grinder.

Make sure that whatever grinder you get, it does not require huge amounts of cleanup after or you will absolutely hate it.

Magic Bullet is great. Use the flat blade. After a few tries it's very easy to consistently grind it coarse, medium or fine, depending on what you need. Wouldn't spend any more than the $20 for a Magic Bullet if you need a coffee grinder.

Actually having a good grinder is essential. Having a good espresso machine and some blade grinder is like having am awesome set of speakers and a crappy amp.

I don't know if they have that exact grinder, but the Bay (at least at Southcentre) has quite a large Bodum section. In southcentre, its on the second floor, right near the entrance into the mall.

I've always wanted to do a blind taste test. Exact same bean and maker but with a crappy grinder and a good one. I am cynical.
For drip coffee, it likely doesn't matter too much but for espresso making it wouldn't even be close.

What a good grinder (burr grinder) does is that it grinds the beans uniformly so all of the grounds are roughly the same size. This allows for equal extraction from each ground and a richer fuller tasting coffee. I wasn't a believer either, and used a blade grinder for years until I got a burr grinder earlier this year. For even a french press the results were immediately better. And for espresso a burr grinder is essential.

French press with a blade grinder = sludge in the bottom. A good burr grinder is so uniform that all the grounds will be too large to pass through the screen.

No homo.

I ended up getting the Baratza Virtuoso at Phil & Sebastian since that was the one grinder I kept hearing about over and over. We'll see how it works....if it makes a big difference, I might get one for myself.

Then I'll probably have to get one of them fancy espresso makers.
