View Full Version : Best (and Worst) Theme Songs

saskflames69

I was watching George Strombolopolus Tonight, immediately after it ended I heard "Fwaaaaa fwafwafwafwafwaaaaaa" and I began to grow sad. Coronation Street. That theme song is so depressing. It has got to be the worst theme song for any TV show.

The best by far is the Littlest Hobo. I don't think any theme song or intro could top this one.

lgGKSjiw0HQ

Yes, they still show it on CTV on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and no, I am not ashamed to admit I will wake up at 8 am, turn on the TV, watch some Littlest Hobo, then crawl back to bed and sleep for another hour and a half.

Everybody knows theme songs are your last chance to use the washroom, kill the lights, get a snack, etc.

Nothing got me more juiced up on Saturday mornings when I was a kid than the Thundercats theme song.

I don't know what those subtitles are on this video, best I could find.

from the description in the video you linked

Turns out, the singing in BSG's opening is actual lyrics, taken from the Gayatri Mantra: oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tát savitúr váreniyaṃ bhárgo devásya dhīmahi dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt

The Language is Sanskrit. Basically, it translates into something like: We meditate upon the radiant Divine Light of that adorable Sun of Spiritual Consciousness; May it awaken our intuitional consciousness.

znrjbo9QRLk&feature

From wikipedia:

Premise
The comedy revolves around Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carroll_O%27Connor)), a working-class World War II veteran. He is a very outspoken bigot, seemingly prejudiced against everyone who is not a U.S.-born, politically conservative, heterosexual White Anglo-Saxon Protestant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Anglo-Saxon_Protestant) male, and dismissive of anyone not in agreement with his view of the world. His ignorance and stubbornness tend to cause his malapropism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malapropism)-filled arguments to self-destruct. He often responds to uncomfortable truths by blowing a raspberry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blowing_a_raspberry). He longs for simpler times when people sharing his viewpoint were in charge, as evidenced by the nostalgic theme song "Those Were the Days", the show's original title.
By contrast, his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean_Stapleton)) is a sweet and understanding, if somewhat naïve, woman. She usually defers to her husband. On the rare occasions when Edith takes a stand she proves to be one of the wisest characters, as evidenced in the episodes "The Battle of the Month (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_All_in_the_Family_episodes#Season_3:_1972. E2.80.931973)" and "The Games Bunkers Play (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_All_in_the_Family_episodes#Season_4:_1973. E2.80.931974)". Archie often tells her to "stifle" herself and calls her a "dingbat".[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_in_the_Family#cite_note-4) Despite their different personalities they love each other deeply.
They have one child, Gloria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Stivic) (Sally Struthers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sally_Struthers)), who is married to college student Michael Stivic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Stivic) (Rob Reiner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Reiner)). "Michael" is referred to as "Meathead" by Archie and "Mike" by nearly everyone else. Mike is a bit of a hippie, and his morality is informed by the counterculture of the 1960s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counterculture_of_the_1960s). He and Archie represent the real-life clash between two generations. They constantly clash over religious, political, social, and personal issues. For much of the series, the Stivics live in the Bunkers' home to save money, providing even more opportunity for the two men to irritate each other. When Mike finally finishes graduate school and the Stivics move out, it turns out to be to the house next door. The house was offered to them by George Jefferson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Jefferson), the Bunkers' former neighbor, who knows it will irritate Archie. In addition to calling him "Meathead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Stivic)", Archie also frequently cites Mike's Polish ancestry, referring to him as a "dumb Polack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Name_of_Poland#Exonyms)".
The show is set in the Astoria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astoria,_Queens) section of Queens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens), one of New York City's five boroughs, with the vast majority of scenes taking place in the Bunkers' home (and later, frequently, the Stivics' home). Occasional scenes take place in other locations, most often (especially during later seasons) Kelcy's Bar, a neighborhood tavern where Archie spends a good deal of time and which he eventually buys

Harrison Ford was offered the part of Mike Stivic on "All in the Family" (1968), but turned it down, citing the bigotry of Archie Bunker was too offensive.

While they might not be "best ever", these are some memorable ones that are oversights so far:

Of course with this one, the credits is where the gold really is (Captain Planet):

A favorite from a more recent show, war drums anyone?

I don't know what those subtitles are on this video, best I could find.

I like the melodic and non-western instrumentation and more esoteric music that McCreary used for the new BSG. That said, part of my still wishes we heard this theme a little more often (but not too much).

Lot's of themes missing.

By the great Henry Mancini, a theme so good it lives on long after the show.

I just got Netflix and one thing that was a pleasant surprise was remembering how awesome some 90's themes were: NewsRadio and Mad About You.

Somewhat unrelated, but I miss startings. I know by cutting them they can have an extra 30 seconds of show or commercials or whatever, but I miss them anyway.
