IF YOU THINK YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO MAKE YOUR PICK, PM PlayfulGenius, MrMike or I a list of the players you want at your pick and we will pick the highest player remaining from your list for you

Hey guys basically the same as the NHL.com one, serpentine draft (1-30, 30-1). Teams must be salary cap compliant, we'll do the draft once we have all 30 spots filled, teams will be assigned on first come fiPickrst served basis ADDED RULES: The draft goes on from 10am-10pm mountain time, but feel free to make picks if you are on the clock and on CP outside of those hours. There is a 2 hour draft window for each person, and if you do not make a pick during those 2 hours, you are assigned the highest ranked player remaining from the original NHL.com draft. (to an extent, if you already have Miller and Lundqvist as your goalies, we're not going to give you Tim Thomas). You CANNOT take Marc Savard.

I think the best decision is to have this take place online over the course of a week or so just so that we could have the maximum number of people participate and to make it work best. But this will require a commitment from everyone

People could just be in the habit of checking in periodically, and PMing you a list of players equal in length to the number of selections til their next pick.

Ex. I just sent you a list of 3 players... I sent 3 because I have the 3rd pick.

Cheerio
08-26-2011, 08:38 PM
This will be extremely hard for me to do on my own, so if 2 people (one from the middle and one from the end of the round) would be willing to step up and help me with this it would be greatly appreciated. And if someone was unavailable to pick in the middle of the round they would PM their pick to the "mod" in the middle of the round, and same with the end and the beginning of each round. In the interests of saving time it will be 20 rounds (12F 6D 2G) or if someone wants to turn this into some kind of league or sim or whatever they can with a 23 round draft, just let me know what is wanted. We could either do it with multiple rounds a day for a week or so, or a round a day for 20 days taking us to the start of the season :D

PlayfulGenius
08-26-2011, 08:54 PM
I think it'll be better to have the round go throughout the day, as opposed to a specific time, as we'll inevitably have to do something about an absentee.

How 'bout we have each round go throughout the day and people can PM a list in advance to quicken things up. To lighten the responsibility, we can have 3 people available as 'moderators'. I'd volunteer to be one.

Teams 1-10 can send list to Moderator A... teams 11-20 can use Moderator B... teams 21-30 use Moderator C. I don't think it'd matter too much whether the moderators were spread out amongst the picking order, per se, as was suggested earlier.

I'll help out as much as needed, I would love to turn this into some sort of season if someone has the know how to do that.

And I can help in whatever is needed, but just 30 people sending in 30 lists sounds pretty boring

I would say lets do 10 rounds in a session, as long as we can get everyone to agree on one time to be online, do your homework and it'll go fast

MrMike
08-26-2011, 09:14 PM
Why don't we, instead of planning this for weeks ahead, check and see if something like this sunday, say 8pm to 11pm would work for everyone.

If we can get at least say 24 out of 30 to agree, then we can plan accordingly for the other 6.

Again, if we do our homework and it's online, it will go fast.

I think it's better then waiting for everyone once a day, what if say I'm third to pick that day and I work late and can't make it on here till 8:30pm (just as an example)

Lets see if we can get a majority like i said (at least 24) to agree to a time and then see where we want to go with this. ( I don't know how sims work or anything like that but I'm all ears)

When we did drafts for other things a while ago we had a slotted time for everyone to draft. If they couldnt make it they could PM their picks to the commissioner (which you Cheerio automatically volunteer for by starting the thread ;) ).

Or get GirlySports to run things. Shes the draft queen.

MrMike
08-26-2011, 09:22 PM
Okay, I will start a spreadsheet of available times by person and we will go with the day and times that fit into most peoples, then we will get a list submitted by the other players if they still want to be part of a season or we will set up another thread asking for people who want to be involved and if they are available at that time.

Wow, this turns into a lot of work real quick.

Well I'll save everyone the suspense - Oilers will take Sidney Crosby 1st overall.

I think this approach will work fine over the next week or two. Most of us have blackberries (or other smart phones) and internet access at home and at the office . As long as every participant checks Calgarypuck two or three times a day they will see that their turn is approaching and "govern themselves accordingly", no? I recognize that some participants may have less access to the internet than others (depending on their job etc.), but perhaps those participants who have less access to the internet can make an extra effort to check Calgarypuck as often as is practicable for the next two (or even three/four) weeks?

I would suggest that Cheerio [Colorado Avalanche] just go ahead and pick next in this thread (as soon as he or she has the opportunity).

Perhaps it would also make sense for everyone to announce their draft pick as follows:

1st pick, 1st round, for Oilers: Sidney Crosby;
Next pick: Cheerio for Avalanche.

It might make it easier to record (although I suppose everyone should keep track of the draft picks for their own tream) and easier for people checking in on the thread to recognize when their turn is approaching.

I just offer this as a suggestion.

1-2 Colorado, Alexander Ovechkin, LW, 9.53M
1-3 Florida, Jonathan Toews, C, 6.3M
1-4 New York Islanders, Steven Stamkos , C, 7.5M
1-5 Ottawa, Evgeni Malkin, C, 8.7M
1-6 Winnipeg, Pavel Datsyuk, C, 6.7M

Anyone bored enough to consider discussing these picks thus far?

I opted to go with a combo of youth, leadership and reasonable cap hit. I like the Datsyuk pick as well. Malkin is iffy for me at 8.7M, just because of the injury season last year. Ovechkin is awesome, but 9.53M is very steep, making it tough to fill the rest of the roster.

Edit: I do realize this will take alot of work on my part and sometimes I might not be doing right up to the minute updates. Basically I have the same schedule everyday and the best time for me to update that page is after 7 Sunday-Thurs and Friday and Saturday depends on what is going on.

You might be right, but I don't think any NHL GM would agree with you.

One of the Canuck's mistakes was making Luongo captain. That's when their culture shifted to whining and diving. Then, they follow that up with Henrik as captain and things don't get any better in that regard.

Had they kept Mitchell and let him wear the C, or even Bieksa, I think they'd be better off. Anyway, my point is, there's no need to put a letter on Henrik, but there's no denying that he's a superior talent.

NHL GMs wouldn't let him sneak out of the Top 5.

I think that one could legitimately argue that his value is diminished in these circumstances because it is impossible (highly unlikely) to draft both he and Daniel to the same team. Obviously he is still a talented player on his own but it does make him a bit of an unknown quantity.

This is where I think it could get fun. Lets build our teams and then see who has the most points by the end of the year.

I actually created a league on ESPN and we could keep track of our teams on their just like a regular hockey pool. It would be your standard hockey pool where only points count, their won't be any bench spots, if your player gets injured then thats too bad. Also goalies points would be 2 for a W, 3 for a S/O and 1 for a tie.

Only thing is the site only allows 20 teams per league, so I created 1 league with 15 teams which would be teams 16-30. Someone could create a league for teams 1-15. The leagues would be viewable to the public so you can check to see where you compare to other teams in both leagues. Or if not enough people are interested in this we could just get as many people who are interested in it for fun.

Not sure if anyone has used ESPN before for hockey pools, but I find it way better then Yahoo. You would just need to create an account on ESPN which only takes a minute and also teams 16-30 would need to pm their email addy so I can invite you to the league.

Or if most people already have a yahoo account we can just use yahoo if its easier.

I'd say just who has the best team, but thats only me. I know I"m in a few pools every year and the best one is just players, there doesn't have to be so many forwards or so many defensmen and no goalies. Its just points, but the thing is you only draft 16 players and you can only have one player per team.

OK, sounds good.

Regarding a time limit, it gets tough because it defeats the purpose of the draft once players are 'assigned' to teams.

Nothing too off the board so far, and honestly I have no idea what to do with the Canadiens (Caged Great's) team. Any and all suggestions will be considered and appreciated

ps. 1st post updated with pick list...

Personally I would give it to PegCity. He said he would have loved to play if he had known about it.

I didnt really have anyone in mind, saw it was my pick, went and looked at last years scoring stats just to make sure I wouldnt forget anyone. I think he's going to have a big year this year considering Richards and Carter being traded + he has a good cap hit.

Teams 11-20 can send their picks to me and you're team 19, so you can pass those along any time. Team 20 has sent theirs to me already, so we'll have a couple of picks go be quickly, anyway :)

Should we select a player for the Canadiens and let PegCityFlames choose the rest of the team (or whoever ends up taking over)... we could be waiting a while as we don't know if PCF will even come back into the thread... I guess we could PM him... someone likely has already, nevermind me.

If it would be helpful, I can assume the role of GM for the habs (my second favourite team anyway), leaving the Capitals (who don't draft until 25th) available for either PegCityFlames or kipperfan. This might move things along and give PegCityFlames more time to get up to speed. Let me know what you think.

Or, you guys could have just let me take the Habs as I would have picked about 12 hours ago already!

That sounds like a good idea. It would be up to Cheerio/Hockey/PlayfulGenius to make the final call but I agree that might move things along for the next few picks.

I don't think its unfair to PCF, as they'll be another team available at some point for sure. Let's get Cheerio's opinion.

^ Yeah, I had another player in mind for my first round pick as Washington because I was pretty sure that Zetterberg would not be available at #25. I had to think about it but Zetterberg, at age 30, for a reasonable cap hit, just seemed like the best choice based on the quality of his play in all three zones, leadership, and experience.

Franchise forwards yes. There are lots of franchise d-men to pick from.

EDIT: I mean....don't pick d-men. All the d-men remaining suck!

Seriously only one pick so far today. I was hoping to be busy tonight updating rosters.

I know not everyone can be here 24/7 waiting for their turn, but maybe we could do something to make things move quicker.

I think if you are in this pool u should check it out as much as you can and say if it's getting close to your pick PM whoever your next 5 picks or however many. That is if you don't think you will be around for your pick.

I'm thinking things will pick up this evening or at least I'm hoping so.

^ Its definitely moving more slowly than I hoped/expected. Hopefully its a case of some people not realizing that the draft had begun and was ongoing. Otherwise, I'm not sure that the excercise is sustainable at this pace.

There's no reason why everyone can't send in a list as soon as they notice they're 10 picks or less away... frustrating.

Yeah I'm surprised at how slowly this is going as well. When we did drafts for random things (movies, girls, heroes/villains) things seemed to go much quicker, at least at first. For a forum based around hockey I didn't think this would take more than a few days.

We could reduce the draft time to a 6 hours instead of the whole day. We could also do something like skip a person and when its their turn to draft again they can select however many outstanding picks they have, but only on their turn.

That'd make sense if this was a competitive thing like a hockey pool, but it defeats the intention of this if a team is weakened from the process itself.

When Cheerio started this thing the teams got filled up pretty quickly, so people should know to check this as much as they can.

I say if we haven't heard from Alan21 by 6:00mst we give his team to either PegCity or kipperfan, then we give Alan21 PegCity or kipperfans team. I mean it doesn't really matter which team you have so I don't think he'd be too upset. If we don't hear from any of them maybe someone pull a David Braley and own 2 teams?

I'm hoping with the Langkow news that people will come here to read about that and then be like Oh Ya the CP draft is going on.

I dont want to be a debbie downer but we need to get this thing rolling and im willing to help if needed at all. 3 days and less than 20 picks is a little embarassing. Half my players will be retired at this rate.
