Okay, so I know there are not a lot of MLS fans on this board, but I figured for those of us who watch, here's a thread to keep track of events. The season started last night with Los Angeles beating Seattle in front of 36000+ fans.

There is a second team in Canada starting up. Vancouver Whitecaps FC is playing their first game against Toronto FC on Saturday.

And last but not least, Chad Ochocinco signed a 4 day tryout with Sporting KC (ignore the ridiculous team name). He claims to be completing a childhood dream, despite the fact that the MLS just started play in 1995, when Ochocinco would have been 17 years old....

"Due to the NFL lockout, I'm excited to be able to follow my childhood dream of playing for a Major League Soccer team," Ochocinco said.

Looking forward to following the Whitecaps - are the games on CBC?

I'm looking forward to going to a Sounders match in Seattle this summer. Sure, it isn't going to be as raucous as some of the Euro or South American stadiums, but it looks like a good time on TV.

ALso - go to this little square about 10 blocks from the stadium I think it is. All the supporters meet there before the game and then march together to the game. It's a lot of fun and a good atmosphere.

There's a legitimate buzz in Vancouver leading up to Saturday's season opener. I'm pretty pumped myself. I just wish they weren't going to play in BC Place later in the year. Soccer is meant to be played outdoors. No retractable roof is going to make me believe that I'm outside in the open air.

Having said that, a Caps game in the summer in the afternoon at Empire Field is going to be fantastic.

For a temporary stadium, they got it right at Empire, it's been a pleasant surprise. I almost wish they could keep the Caps there. Just a better spot for soccer.

Even though I'm not a supporter of the MLS, I'm a little excited about the Whitecaps. Although they don't follow the path I think North American clubs should take, along with the Impact they are the closest to doing so. Also, they will make things right with the sport in this country and ensure Toronto has the crappiest team once again.

And BC Lions games too IMO. I don't think they realized how popular and successful Empire was going to be when they decided to spend $565 Mill on BC Place. I sure though if I forget how much was spent on it I will enjoy the 'new' BC Place one the Whitecaps and Lions start playing there,

Sporting KC? MLS has a very unique blend of identity crisis and inferiority complex that I find absolutely hilarious.

Anyway, it is good to see more Canadian teams about. I'll probably bandwagon the Whitecaps whenever I actually watch a game or two.

Real Salt Lake is still the pinnacle of both, but this is also a city/state that named its basketball team the Utah Jazz. I guess they realized they couldn't use anything that actually reflects Utah as a team name, so borrow from others. Salt Lake Polygamists SC?

No love for Chivas USA? :D

Aren't they actually owned by or associated with Chivas?

I love authentic footy names but unless they actually mean something they are just as trivial as team names. For some reason I associate Victoria with royalty so they could pull off Royal title but only if it was in English (i.e. Royal Victoria F.C.).

I give them a pass because they're owned by the company that produces Chivas scotch and owns Guadalajara in Mexico, whose nickname is 'Chivas.'

At least theres a reason behind that name.

Ya I find some of the names to be ridiculous.

DC United? Who did they unite with? No one...
Real Salt Lake? Real Madrid was granted to be a royal club in 1920, Salt Lake is obviously mooching off their identity.
Sporting KC? They were the Kansas City Wizards until last year, but decided a re-brand after building a new stadium.

At least Chivas USA makes sense. They are owned by Club Deportivo Guadalajara, who are nicknamed the Goats (Chivas).

Keep your eye out for Russel Teibert. Young Canadian kid, came up thru the Caps residency program. He's starting today. PLayed on a few youth Canada teams. Lenarduzzi believes he will be a main stay on the national team in a few years. Hopefully this is just the start of these Canadian teams developing some great Canadian youth players and that can translate into seeing this country in Russia or Qatar in 10 years or so.

Toronto is going to take awhile to be good, they have switched to a completely new system

'total football' with the Ajax braintrust in charge should make them a better team, but with the lower talent of players it's going to take a long time to get proficient at it

most of the Ajax team comes through the youth ranks and starts playing the system at age 11 or 12

The Storm weren't actually that bad when they played within their limits (i.e. the PDL), the A-League Storm and Mustangs on the other hand were quite the cockups! In fact, when they were in the PDL the Storm found the most success of any recent Calgary-based club that ventured into any high-level footy.

Higher level soccer will never work in Calgary unless a soccer based stadium is built, which I don't see happening anytime soon. The only spot I could see them doing it even is if they decided to expand Shouldice Park's main field, where the Calgary Colts could maybe play and a higher level soccer team could share the field, but I doubt that would ever happen.

I'm wondering if maybe an NASL team can use Hellard Field at Shouldice (below)? They would have an instant rivalry with FC Edmonton, who is new this year. Not sure of the size of the stands, but I seem to recall it was 3000? If that fails, maybe an NASL team can partner with the U of C to build a new soccer specific stadium?

Any professional soccer in Calgary would have to start slow and build a fan base revolving around a friendly environment with which to see games. Shouldn't be impossible to find a few thousand soccer fans in Calgary to support a team, should it?

Whats the most "pro" soccer team Calgary has ever had?

Is no one old enough to remember the Calgary Boomers of the NASL, and star import Gerd "Thunderfoot" Zimmerman?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calgary_Boomers

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ef/Calgary_Boomers.png (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/File:Calgary_Boomers.png)

The Calgary Boomers were a professional soccer team, that competed in the North American Soccer League (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/North_American_Soccer_League) during the 1981 season, after which they folded. They were owned by Nelson Skalbania (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Nelson_Skalbania), a Canadian businessman who moved the Memphis Rogues (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Memphis_Rogues) to Calgary, Alberta (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Calgary,_Alberta) after the 1980 season.

Gerd Zimmermann (born 26 September 1949) is a retired German (http://forum.calgarypuck.com/wiki/Germany) football player. This is another reason why I believe footy needs to start off small, its more affordable. If Calgary were to get a couple of PDL clubs, they would only need to share a small ground with a capacity of around 4k max. The park could be modular and grow with the clubs. For instance, they could build a permanent stand on the east or west side of the grounds, then surround it with cheap modular stands. The modular stands could be improved as the clubs grows and once they leave for a permanent stadium the city would be left with a decent stadium for amateur footy, which could be downgraded according to demand/need.

Here (http://www.audiencesystems.com/sports/premiergrandstand/) is an example of the kind of modular seating I'm talking about.

Similar as to how the Mustangs and Aviators had a strong rivalry?

I do know what you mean, though, and strongly agree with your last point. That is why I really loved the PDL Storm, it truly was the perfect point for footy to start over in Calgary.

The Dwayne De Rosario era appears to be over in Toronto.
Sources say that just two games into the franchise’s fifth Major League Soccer season, the team captain and all-time leading scorer will be traded to the New York Red Bulls on Friday. In return, Toronto FC is set to acquire Cameroon midfielder Tony Tchani and South African defender/midfielder Danleigh Borman, along with what is believed to be a first-round draft pick.

I would be angry too. Not to mention the signing of a DP like Mista lastyear would just be a further slap in the face. According to this article he signed with the promise of being a DP only to have it reneged at the last second.

“Houston wanted me to stay and asked me what they could do to keep me. I told them I wanted to play in Toronto in front of the amazing supporters. I showed up to sign my contract and the terms changed. I had no choice but to take it. So I put on a brave face, smiled, played, and did all they asked me.”

If I was a teammate of Maicon Santos, today I would have punched him right in the face. What a selfish a-hole. He could have passed the ball to Stevanovic for a sure goal but kept it, tried to get around the keeper and then missed the net. TFC would have won the match, but instead had to settle for a draw. Unbelievable ending, I don't ever recall any game at any level of soccer/footbally ending like that. Wish I was there, don't even get SN1 so the best I could do was see the highlights:

Not quite MLS but Japan withdrew from the Copa America today and there are rumblings that however longshot WOW Canada might get the invite.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/9446831.stm

Would be huge for the Canadian program and involve a round robin competitive game against Argentina - massive! Other rumours are that CONMEBOL is fishing for Spain to attend but that would not only need their approval but also UEFA's, or that Costa Rica or Honduras might get invited.

For the Canadian MLS teams this could mean they would lose de Guzman, Attakora and potentially Teibert and Dunfield for a long stretch this summer as the Gold Cup is already going on during the MLS season.

I think it is unlikely but am hoping for it - would arguably be the biggest stage Canada has been on since their last world cup.

Kind of off topic but I saw the highlights of this game this morning and told my friend about it on our way to the Lyon-Nice game. Funny thing was Nice was down 2-0 and got two in extra time to equalize. The stadium absolute bedlam, everyone was jumping, throwing flares, climbing fences so they could give the Lyon supporters the finger. Great sunday afternoon.
Southampton was down 2-0 in the second half over the weekend and came back to win too.

Can't wait to get to Empire sometime this summer.

Hassli with his second red card in three games played. Scores on a spot kick, goes to celebrate with the fans, takes jersey off. Second yellow.

Stupid move, justified yellow. You gotta know better than that.

Its just part of the rules. 'Excess celebration' or something along those lines. Its a rule worldwide. Take off your jersey you're going to get a card. Its automatic and non-discretionary, the ref has no choice.

Attendance in Edmonton was 5781 according to this link: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/soccer/Toronto+routs+Edmonton+Nutrilite+Canadian+Champion ship/4686478/story.html. (http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports/soccer/Toronto+routs+Edmonton+Nutrilite+Canadian+Champion ship/4686478/story.html) Their home field seats only 3500 fans so even though the crowd looks bad in 60000 seat stadium, it's still extra revenue in the team's pockets

And to be fair, the Montreal game was going up against Game 7 of the Habs-Bruins. No sport would compete with that game.

the Vancouver - Montreal game today was pretty entertaining.. Van squeaked it with a goal in the second half of extra-time.. Terry Dunfield is quickly becoming one of my favourite players.

the Toronto - Edmonton game wasn't as good but FCE kept it respectable, they've got some good young Canadian players coming up

And to people chirping Edmonton for the attendance last week, the game had to be played at Commonwealth - Foote was out of the question because the CSA doesn't allow these games to be played on fields with gridiron lines.. the poor attendance itself was likely a result of a 6pm local start time and thunderstorm warnings that evening.. I highly doubt Calgary would have done any better, and I HATE edmonton haha

Anyways Vancouver - Toronto in the final, I think Vancouver's gonna come out on top, especially if the injuries TFC suffered tonight are serious.

An absolute shame at BMO Field. Vancouver takes a 1-0 lead in the game and looks poised to win the title, but a second rain delay in the game forces a cancellation of the game. And under CSA rules, any match that is abandoned will be replayed IN ITS ENTIRETY!!!

The Caps lose their goal and will have to start from scratch. I realize the rain was awful, the field was brutal and there was lightning and all that. Fine, call the match, but this replay the entire match thing is efn brutal and totally unfair. The game is scheduled to be replayed tomorrow morning at 11am EST, but they won't make a decision on whether or not it's a go until 3 hours before kickoff.

Not to mention both teams have MLS games this weekend, so if the game goes on tomorrow, the teams will have played 62 minutes on Wednesday, a full 90 and maybe more on Thursday, have a day off(Vancouver flies across the country) and play another 90 on Saturday. An absolute joke.

Here's the CSA rule:

Official Nutrilite Canadian Championship rule 12: If the match is abandoned before the completion of normal playing time because of extreme weather or for reasons outside the control of the host team, the match shall be replayed in its entirety the following day, thus avoiding the considerable extra expense for the visiting team. If it is still impossible to play the match the next day for the same reasons, the match may be postponed by another day, provided both teams agree. If the match can still not be played on the third day, the expenses thus incurred by the visiting team shall be split between the two teams. A decision will be taken within two hours of the referee’s decision to abandon the match, in consultation with the two clubs concerned. In case of dispute, the CSA Organizing Committee fixes the date and kick-off time of the match. Its decision is final.

In other Canadian club news, Ottawa has been granted an NASL team to begin play whenever the Landsdowne development is finished, most likely 2014. FC Edmonton has 21 Canadian players on the roster, and is really the only Canadian professional team largely filled with Canadians. Baloteli is a lazy bum, didn't want to be there it seemed. And he started walking right off the pitch after the match without shaking hands or anything until a couple of Whitecaps stopped him and set him straight.

Clichy is a traitor.

Whitecaps in pursuit of Owen Hargreaves

“He knows of our interest. He’s a great player. He’s a Calgary boy, has connections with the club. We’ll stay in contact,” said co-owner Mallett
Man U, which recently released him, he played less than 30 league matches in the past four seasons as his knees were tortured by persistent tendinitis.
Determined to return, Hargreaves issued a series of short lo-fi YouTube videos in late June and early June, to demonstrate his fitness as he hustled through various drills, on the pitch and on a treadmill.

Yep, I'll wait till someone cashes in on the possibility of a rivalry. Can't cheer for any Edmonton team, for any reason. I really hope we get an NASL franchise here sooner rather than later. I'll be one of the first people out to support it.

It's already failed twice in Calgary.

I would support it, but the problem is, where do you play? The only way it works is if you find someone willing to spend the money on a team, on a passable facility and is willing to suffer losses for a few years trying to grow a market from scratch.

The only current facility I could see being fit for temporary play is the Foothills Track, which recently went through an upgrade from the city. If a soccer specific stadium is not built in Calgary, no soccer team will succeed.

Yeah, and that was where the Storm/Mustangs played before moving into an empty McMahon. You could get away with that location for the NASL, but you would have to build better seating and concessions.

This is another reason why I'm a fan of starting off with a PDL club, it would be much eaiser to finance a little park for a club on that scale.

I think that would be a suitable size for a startup PDL venue, however it is a football oriented venue. FC Edmonton currently plays in Foote Field, and it is terrible to watch a game in. Calgary needs to build a soccer specific venue, IMO something like Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston would be perfect. The stadium has a capacity of just over 5000 and cost 5.7 million to build (albeit in 1999)

If Hargreaves has a chance to play for West Bromwich, he'll do it. They're sort of a 'tweener team, but are far more superior competition than the Whitecaps.

On a side note, I remember playing against Hargreaves when he was a kid playing for Foothills. It was funny last year when English announcers were discussing Hargreaves during a Man U game, and popped a mention in for Calgary and the Foothills soccer club. One of them said "Foothills? I've never heard of it, so I can't imagine the quality of a club like that." It made me laugh.

I've been torn as to which Cascadia squad to support since I used to live in Portland, but have spent much more time in Seattle in recent years. I have followed the Sounders since their addition to MLS, but this year Portland threw a wrench in the works...

I tried to fight it for a while, but I've set aside my affair with the Sounders and have become a full fledged member of Timbers Army.

The matches against Seattle this season sealed the deal. I went into them with an open mind, but it was obvious from the first Portland goal where my heart lied. I still like Seattle, and root for them against everyone else (perhaps the hatred will build in time), but the Timbers are my squad going forth.

I just bought my tickets for the match against Chivas USA next month, general admission, north end. Should be fun!

West Brom fans were greeted to a health and safety nightmare  of a celebration in a pre-season friendly against the Portland Timbers, as the MLS side's mascot sliced through a massive log with a chainsaw after each goal.

TFC have become excruciating to watch. I think the bandwagon on that club has emptied in full. It's a shame because they were the hottest franchise in town the first few years.

The Canadian clubs are not doing too well. Toronto and Vancouver are the 2 worst teams in the MLS, and Montreal is 2nd last in the NASL. Only expansion FC Edmonton look like they'll see any postseason play.

Also, here's a video of how Toronto was introduced last night in Kansas City. Pretty funny if you ask me.

Looks like NBC is going to try to position NBC Sports as a serious competitor to ESPN.

If they use their existing relationship with the NFL and NBA to transfer some of those games to the new network, plus push some Olympic coverage to that station during Olympic years, they will be a good alternative.

Table, pitch, nil those sorts of things.
