Great to see Rebecca Marino move on to the next round. With the injuries Alexsandra Wozniak is fighting, she could be the next Canadian to make her mark on the tour.

Predictions -
Men: Nadal
Women: Clijsters

First epic match of the tournament.

#27 David Naldandian (ARG) def. Lleyton Hewitt 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1), 9-7

I saw a teeny bit this morning, Hewitt definitely had more chances, he was up a set twice and they flashed a graphic on the screen that he was 6 out of 30 in break chances.

Also, Ana Ivanovic is out, her career is going nowhere.

Also, Ana Ivanovic is out, her career is going nowhere.

It's really too bad, because when Ivanovic was at the top of the rankings, she was damn good. She changed her serve in 2009 and wonder if that has been her downfall. One analyst says it's an issue with her ball toss.

On the Broadcast they said Raonic is a qualifier ranked 151 in the world.
He had to win 3 matches to get into the tournament.

In 5 matches he has served 90 aces.

Also he's clocked the fastest serve of the tournament so far at 230 km/h

Also first Canadian man to make 3rd round of a slam in 10 years. (Nestor 2001 Australian)

First major of the year! What can say? I'm excited :)

Raonic plays Friday 5pm (our time) against Youzhny. It's on the same court he beat Llodra. I think that's a good thing since tennis players are pretty superstitious.

So last night Venus Williams went out, retired after 1 game.

It's her first retirement of her entire career!

She was hurt in the 2nd round but fought through that match. Went out for the warm up last night, played one game, couldn't move and had to retire.

Early in the match, the commentators were saying they thought Raonic was good, but didn't have the complete package. They specifically said he needed to work on his footwork and backhand.

Fast forward to the third set and I actually heard "I take that back" from one of the commentators.

Minus Daniel Nestor's doubles dominance, this performance is one of the best in Canadian tennis history.

Nestor beating Edberg in Davis Cup was crazy too but this would be right up there for me.

Super flukey shank shot on the break for the Russian there, he's kind of douchy with all his screaming too, at least he doesn't grunt after his shots though.

You got it.

He faced Nadal at the Rogers Cup last summer and it was a great one. I believe it was 6-4 6-4. After the match, Nadal said he could see Ranoic in the top 20. That's a nice bill of confidence right there.

This is the first time a Canadian man has reached the round of 16 at a major since Nestor in 1988 at Flushing Meadows.

31 aces! What a sexy service motion! And he's got a pretty decent game too, not just a serve and nothing else like Isner or Karlovic.

Yup he will play David Ferrer on Sunday night (our time) in the round of 16. Another win and he would get Nadal in the QF.

BTW for the 6 matches he has won this week (3 qualifying and 3 main draw) he has earned $93,000 and a tonne of ranking points.

Speaking of...where is Tsonga? He must be injured. I forgot about him until tonight while watching Raonic. He reminded me a lot Tsonga a couple of years back, when he came out of no where and unfortunately fell to Djokovic in an epic five set final.

I'm certainly not saying Raonic will end up in the final, but I love stories like this: where a challenger starts to make his mark on the tour. Tonight, the mostly Aussie crowd was chanting "Go Canada!" and "You can do it Canada!". They don't even know his name, but they want him to win. These are the reasons I just love tennis.

GirlySports

Great interview. I just had a chance to listen to it at work. It's nice to see him get praise from the commentators and I laughed at them assuming every Canadian is born with skates on :).

He says he models his game to that of Pete Sampras. You can certainly tell from his serve.

If you're interested in knowing more about Milos, here's a transcript of a great presser with him: http://tennisconnected.com/home/2011/01/22/ao-milos-raonic-third-round-press-conference/

I figured this would come somewhere....

Q. The last best Canadian player ended up playing for Great Britain. I take it you will play for Canada.
MILOS RAONIC: Yes.

Frankly, the last "best Canadian player" will and always will be Nestor, but whatever :)

A lot of celebration from the haircut needing Spainard for beating a guy that's 150th in the world.
A few mental mistakes at crucial times in the 3rd and 4th sets turned out to be the issue for Raoinic.

Great tournament, hope that Raonic can keep it up.

Although on last night's broadcast they said that 'officially' in 1994 Rusedski was ranked 41 while still Canadian.

It's pretty hard in the earlier rounds because of the sheer number of players. ESPN generally only has the well-known players on tv broadcasts, with many of the other matches streaming live on their websites. TSN takes ESPN's feed and that's why we didn't get to see all of Raonic's match on tv last night. TSN streams all of the courts on their website and the streams don't use the ESPN broadcast. They instead use local Aussie broadcasters or other international broadcasts, depending on the tournament. I'd say that's your best bet to see your favorite player, but I know that's not an option for some folks because they are using their PVRs.

TSN only covers the Rogers Cup, where the Canadian players all get a chance to have at least one match aired.

Because we have now reached the quarterfinals, you'll probably be able to see every match on TSN (ESPN's broadcast).

To be fair, I only watch majors and that is only the SF and Final so I haven't watched Murray enough. I can't stand Dorkovic at all and other then Federer and Nadal, he is the only other one besides the 3 that I mentioned, that have a shot.

They ran a stat the other day.

Federer or Nadal have won 21 of the last 23 Grand Slams.
Federer 12 and Nadal 9. That's dominance.

The only other 2 are

Djokovic 2008 Australian Open
Del Potro 2009 US Open

I wouldn't mind a new champ too. A couple of years back, Tsonga and Djokovic played an epic Aussie final and that's what I love. I don't mean to slight Nadal or Federer. They are amazing world-class athletes and I appreciate their extensive resumes, but I'd just like a change.

It was awesome to see Del Potro win the US Open in '09 and I might not like him, but when Roddick just about took Wimbledon.

For the women, I bias and want Clijsters to win everything under the sun because I adore her attitude. She never gives up on any ball, even if she knows she's not going to win the point. Next to that, she is a true sportsman and person. There's definitely a girl crush there on my part.

Clijsters had a tough time with Radwanska. One of Kim's few faults is that she tends to zone out during matches and that showed tonight. She's going to have a battle with Zvonareva in the semis. Kim beat her in the US Open final, but lost to her at Wimbledon.

Murray just defeated Doglopolov in four sets. He seems pretty confident.

Nadal versus Ferrer is coming up next, but I don't think I'll stay up for that one. I think we all know what's going to happen there.

Without any pazazz, Daniel Nestor has won another title, this time the mixed doubles with Katarina Srebotnik.

Overall, a good Grand Slam. I thought the good stories died down four or five days ago and people started to lose interest. It was a great coming out party for Raonic. It looks like he's already qualified for another tournament. He's definitely a name to remember.

It's not even about the doubles. It's just too bad Nestor doesn't get recognized for his achievements (not directed at you). He has the Order of Canada, Olympic gold, has won countless awards and remains a viable part of the tennis circuit, despite his age.

Hopefully, he can work even closer with Tennis Canada when he decides to retire. I think his experience and attitude can really help a country that's been a joke of the tennis world for awhile now.

Actually, on paper it looked like it would be a really good match. Too bad Murray didn't show up though, Nole was better in every aspect. Especially his serve.
Murray has the talent, he just needs to become mentally stronger. But then again, it's not easy when the entire UK is on his back to become the first UK player to win a Grand Slam since 1936. No pressure.

As for Nestor, he and his partner Zimonjic (now ex) got a lot of exposure here in Serbia. And the doubles in general. Sure, it's a lot less popular than singles, but over here (in Europe in general) the doubles have more meaning that it might mean in NA. Besides, playing doubles is not as easy as you think.

I like Nestor, he could have bolted for another country when things were going bad in Canada. But he's always been there in Davis Cup and will teach Raonic alot about volleying and playing the big matches. Nestor's singles isn't bad, he just can't play a full season on tour. He caused quite a few singles upsets in Davis Cup and in the majors.

Doubles is ok, they've done alot to try and spice it up, like no 'advantage' and no 3rd set. However, it's just the undercard most nights before the singles. The problem is that singles is so physically demanding nowdays that none of the top singles players can really play doubles anymore.

Finally, Murray will never win a grand slam. He's too defensive, and has no weapons to turn a match around on the big stage. His style is too physical to last 7 best-of-5 set matches.
This was his best chance, easy draw, no Soderling, no Nadal, no Federer. He only had to be one top ranked guy, and he couldn't.

I can see you don't watch doubles :)

In the grand slams, it's normal tennis scoring.

In the other events, they don't play advantage. If it's duece, the next point wins. And if they split the first two sets, they don't play a 3rd set, they play a 10 point super tiebreaker.

I think the only thing that can save doubles tennis is they start giving man advantages to one team. Like if a team reaches so many unforced errors they have to play a man short for so many points with singles boundaries.
