The Toronto Maple Leafs have been burning the midnight oil, trying to figure out what they will be doing with their roster this season. Previous rosters under the helm of GM Prototype have seen top end tallent brought in, but the team has failed to provide those players with a supporting cast.
So the GM set an expectaion based on a trade. If the team was able to bring in one of the young studs they've been after for a while. If they could bring in Michael Del Zotto, it would shift the priority from win now, to win tomorrow.
After smooth talks, the Leafs have send Defenseman Trevor Daley and cap considerations to the Minnesota Wild for Del Zotto and Buffalo's 3rd in the upcoming draft.
"We took an overall look at the organization," claimed GM Prototype, "and we're done with fooling ourselves that this team is ready. We could beat ourselves day after day for a win, or we could lay the ground work for something special in the future."
There's no future in Toronto right now, and without future, the current losses have hurt the franchise. Moves will be made to better the potential of this team, so that the ground work is there for a full roster, and not just one or two players.
Having said that, we are not in a position to take on draft picks only for some of our players. There isn't much in the reserves on this roster. There's maybe two or three players we could work something around, but for the most part, we're looking for 1 for 1 at the very least.
Thanks to Grant for the talks, and we look forward to hearing offers on one and all.
While Robbie was able to coax away the type of asset I don't regularly part with - but Daley is still very good, relatively affordable and is a 7 point upgrade for me.
Del Zotto was a weak point since being called up -3 in very limited action.
But he's got immense upside as a scorer from the back end so I think he's a good pick up for Rob.
I first wanted to thank everyone for their interest in my players, and let everyone know that this process isn't a race to win my next game, like many trades have been in the past. At least it isn't for the Leafs.
This is a rebuild process. I know we're young into this season, but I didn't want to make a knee jerk decision, and have it not pan out in time. It's a process that I don't feel like I need to rush.
Having said that, I do appreciate the offers, and the willingness to figure out exactly what I'm looking for in return for the players I currently have on my roster.
There has not been an offer that I've lost my mind over, otherwise there'd be more trading done out of Toronto. There have been a few offers that I've really had to think about, and some that I'm still thinking about, but nothing that is quite there.
The bottom line is that I'm waiting for the right offer, not the right now offer. This team needs youth, and I have some great pieces to make sure I can grab some. I have been told that for some of my players, I'm over pricing them, and that's fine. But to get the players I have right now, you're going to have to pay... especially if I have to pay for the bulk of a players contract for this season.
I'm willing to talk, but I have an idea in mind of what I'm looking for in return, and I have all season to wait for that return... even if it's at trade deadline for those who want an extra kick heading into playoffs.
I do appreciate the patience of the GMs who have inquired, as they may want to get a deal done sooner, for their next game, but please understand, I'm not quite on the same time crunch.
Thanks guys... keep those offers coming!
