Default New Skate-Sharpening Method Takes Hockey by Storm

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/02/sp...r=2&ref=sports

Does anyone know if the Flames have adopted this?

Quote:
BlackStone Sports, the Ontario manufacturer of skate maintenance equipment that developed the flat-bottom V method, says players on about 20 of the N.H.L.’s 30 teams have switched from the traditional sharpening method in use for decades.

“It started with Cory Stillman in Florida,” said Steve Wilson, who founded Blackstone with his father, Murray, and developed the flat-bottom V cut with him and with company engineers.

I have been using this type of sharpening for the last 6 months and it actually is not that bad. The gliding aspect is noticeable. There are a couple places in calgary that do this now as well.

Hockey Experts lets you pick out of these 8 choices. I believe Tuxedo Source for Sports does too, but I haven't tried them yet.

Similar to the rest of their equipment (gloves, helmet, visor/not, skates, stick, etc...), the way a player sharpens their skates is completely up to them. So it should really be, which of the Flames have adopted this? (If any)

I've been using this technique a fair bit in the past while. (They do it really well at Hockey Experts). You notice more glide, and I do enjoy it, but the downside for me (I like my skates really sharp for every game) is that I have to sharpen my skates every game with that technique.

Really? I guess I'm out of the running for it then. I gotta have my skates done at least once every two games played or about 6 reffed.

I'd heard about this on GSH a couple years ago, but I couldn't find anyone around where I lived that would do it. It was only in a couple places in Ontario at the time.

Now if these guys could strike a deal with therma-blade (warming blades) they'd have a killer product on their hands.

Just asked my father-in-law about Therma-Blade, as he has stocks in them. Didn't sound good as they were asking the investors for more money last I heard.... Too bad as it is a good concept, that just can't seem to get off the floor.

watching the videos, i notice that the sharpener's last pass is with the direction of the wheel.

i always did my last pass against the direction of the wheel. theory being that the sparks would not spray (perhaps heat and fuse to) the blade.

I do the sharpening at Hockey Experts, I would suggest getting a honing stone and using that on your skates prior to an ice time to maintain the sharpen. Some people have said it lasts longer, some say shorter, some say the same. I use 90/75 and find I can go about the same as before, but a honing stone REALLY helps.

FBV is incredible. Probably 98% of our customers do it now. Can't go wrong at $4 as opposed to $10 at Source For Sports.

First I need to learn how to use a honing stone properly. I always seem to make my skates even duller when I use them.

But you're definitly right about the price.

It's best if you can see a sharpener do it in person, kinda hard to explain the proper method. I can get them QUITE sharp the way I do it. Never had anything but nice things said about my sharpening.

Haha that reminds me of a guy I played with back in the day (probably peewee or bantam). He got this honing stone out and just started grinding away on his blades. Only problem was he was grinding on the bottom of the blade. He was just givin' 'er. Everyone stopped and looked and was like...what the hell are you doing man?!
