This thread is something that's probably been talked about a number of times, but I'd really like to see what people think about this topic honestly in a rational fashion.
It's becoming increasingly clear to myself that despite what his team mates are saying Jarome Iginla is on the decline. I honestly don't see another 50 goal season and I doubt he'll break the 100 point plateau. Most concerning of all is his lack of "clutch" scoring. He seems to be a defensive liability 5 on 5 and is turning into a perimeter player.
Should Iginla be jettisoned at this point while his value is still high? What would it take for another team to pry Iginla away from the Flames?
Personally if Sutter can get a lottery pick, a good player and prospect for him, I think that he should move the captain.
This is not a trade proposal, but something similar to trading him to Florida for Horton, Mathias and their first round pick in 2010 would be Iginla's value at the moment.

From a hockey point of view it could make sense but from a business point of view its a no go.
Plus its probably one of those trades where you make them then you regret in an instant. I bet you if you traded Iginla he'll go on to be like Roberts and continue to be super productive.
Suggesting we trade him for "a good player and a draft pick," while we intentionally tank the remaining 70 games this season for a "lottery pick" is where I draw the line.
Yes there is room to criticize him, but after everything he's done for this organization, we're supposed to ship him off to Florida the moment he's not on pace for 40 goals?

I think whats going to happen is what happened to Steve Yzerman. Jarome will finish a Flame simply due to his presence and what he's given the organization. As well if he is on the decline I'm sure he's classy enough to take up a spot on the third line and let the more talented players take over the scoring roles he used to fill.
Now at this moment when we are not even 15 games into the season I'd say its unfair to say he's not going to have a good season and he's "losing value" or "on the decline". I agree hes getting on in age but I think he'll be able to produce at a good level for a few more years. If we are still having this conversation in march of 2011 then maybe its time to look at who we can bump up to fill his scoring roll, and a paycut for Iggy.

As was mentioned a while back. Jarome is in the process of adjusting his game to fit better into Sutter's system. Under Keenan the offensive focus was more towards scoring on the rush whereas Sutter's system tends to favor those who win forchecking battles on the boards and cycle deep in the zone. At the start of the year Jarome was a fish out of water in this system and lost just about every battle along the boards and was also shy to engage in one. The last few games he's more eager to get into the thick of things and is starting to win more battles, the most recent games against Columbus and Edmonton he fared a whole lot better and was one of the Flames better players. By Christmas he'll be fine.

A slump, or recent poor play, is far from "on the decline". 32 years old does not mean a decline is imminent either. And I challenge you to find a reputable analyst who would agree with your contention that Jarome is a defensive liability 5 or 5.
Finally, if you're as sure about his scoring decline and that he'll NEVER see 50 goals or 100 points again, as you suggest, I'd be glad to make a friendly wager with you over that claim.
Hes a chump, ditch him for a bag of pucks and sign that Jarmoe character!
In all honesty though, what Jarome Iginla has done for this team over the years is absolutely unquantifiable. He is likely the single most important player to ever wear the Flaming C and I would imagine that his loyalty and respect to this team deserve to be repaid to him by this team.
At the end of the day, Jarome Iginla is likely the single most "Untouchable" player in this league.
Every player goes through periods of low production, right now our frustration with him is likely a result of the significantly increased expectations of the team as a whole due to the offseason changes.
Iggy will be Iggy of old again very soon, book it.
