I have a father in law that is a professional guitar player who teaches on the side. He just bought himself a Mac to help him do some recording recently. I was wondering if any of you guys or gals who play would know of something or things that I could get him for Christmas. I was thinking some sort of software or equipment but I have no idea as to what to get or what kind for that matter.
We have got him magazine subscriptions in the past and I know that he does buy the odd preformance DVD as well.
We have a $100 limit for gifts so if I have to go over a little I will.
If he's a professional and a teacher he's probably got all the equipment he needs already and anything he has his eye on will be well out of your price range. Strings are a pretty safe bet - people who play a lot and have a good enough ear to hear the difference between new and old strings burn through those like crazy. But.... that's kinda lame. If you are going to go the string route, be sure to buy the right ones! Snoop in his case and find out what brand, style and gauge he uses
For a music lover, can't go wrong with concert tickets.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Professional eh....if there is one thing they love it's hookers and blow!
I would consider pedals. They should be in about the right price range. Plus there are so many different effects you can get that you can never have them all.
The only thing is you willl need to know what pedals he already has though.

Seconded...if I got a pedal as a gift, I would be super pleased. They are fun to tinker with. The Boss pedals are well built, and run below $100 for most of them.
Oh, also, if he's just getting started with computer recording, the Tone Port GX is a pretty inexpensive way to get going. I've used one to dub myself in on songs I pulled from iTunes into Garageband, and it works pretty well.

My brother's getting into recording on his PC, so I just bought him a USB Recording Interface (don't know if there's a better term for it). Basically, it's a device that takes a standard mic or line input and converts it to USB, making it way easier to get the signal into the computer. I picked one up at Long & McQuade for about $60, but I believe it was an older model as they were clearing a few out. I imagine it would normally be around $100.
Best thing ever if he doesn't have one would be a "clip-on" tuner. Don't know how I got by without one. I use mine on wind instruments, but still, same thing for guitars. Just clips right onto the headstock.

Pro tools is your best bet for a recording software.
And the worlds greatest Guitar toy is the Roland GR-20 Guitar synthesizer.
It is 500 dollars though so i doubt that is practical, but easily worth it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXSHs6f_5TU
