Icon40 Pens lock up Suter award winner

The Pittsburgh Penguins were pleased to announce that they locked up 2008 CPHL Gary Suter trophy winner Andrei Markov to a 3 year deal worth 9.5million per season.

Quote:
Andrei was the top defenseman in the entire CPHL last season, and at 29 years old we see him in his prime in both the CPHL and the NHL for the duration of this contract. We look forward to having Andrei as the staple of our blueline for years to come.

9.5 million yes, but Derian Hatcher no. Of course Goffie signs his favorite player long term, he'll be dynamite for the Pens.

Sorry, I just got the vision of 30+ cphl players making 10 million after this offseason... hence my response. Not really a comment on the Pens, Goffie has to do what he has to do

Well realistically 9.5 million is what like 13.6% of our salary cap? If you have 2-3 guys on good contracts it's not too hard to have 2 or 3 guys making that much on your team.

To be honest I think 9.5 million is a huge contract, but to lock up a 82ov defenseman in his prime is a no brainer. I don't think that there are many teams who would not love to have a player with such a high ranking anchoring their blueline. At 29 Markov is far from old and I expect him to hold this rating for the duration of this contract if he keeps up his play of the past couple of seasons. He has been one of the top 2 way defenseman in both the CPHL and NHL the past few years and was by far gold medal winning Russia's top blueliner at the WC this past year. To be honest I would much rather have an 82ov at 9.5 mill then a 75 and a 74 combined to make the same salary.

Yeah, really how many guys who rate 75 or better are actually going to make it to the UFA pool, let alone a 82 guy. For a league where every team claims to be out of cap...theres a lot of grid UFA's finding ways to be signed, or acquired.

The only reason I'm saying "No Comment" as I'll be running a roster with 2 $10M men, and potentially 2 more after next off season. Should be an interesting year for the Oilers and contracts.

I just wanted to state for the record that my comment was in jest as I am paying $10 million for a 72Ov defenceman now! (Unless I pull the trigger on one of the many trade offers for him!!!).

Pens had to keep him. As Goffie said he's one of the top defenseman in NHL and CPHL. And most importantly he's in his prime so although it's a big contract it's very unlikely the Pens will get screwed by Markov's play falling off. He should be this good for at least a few more years.
