I'm all over it. He's one guy that I really liked from the Oil, and never really figured out why they would trade away such a character player (nevermind team captain).
I'd take him over Vandermeer any day of the week.

Question though, and something I've been thinking about since last season. If an agent and a team are talking about a UFA, isn't that considered tampering if said team doesn't hold player's rights?
The news of Gomez, Drury, Breire came pretty quick last season. I can't imagine a fax came right away, and they took the first deal they saw.
So if this rumour is true, how does a team talk to a player/agent without acquiring their rights?
Regardless, I like the move. Smith is a no nonsense defenseman that would pair up nicely with either Dion or Regher IMO. It'll be nice to watch him smuch the Oilers in the games against his old team too.
Same player as Rhett Warrener, except he has only missed 11 games over the past 3 seasons, and he's 30% cheaper than Rhett's contract if 1.7 is true.
I'd take it.

Brings leadership and grit but also age and slowness I'd imagine.

Picking Sutter in the 6th round is bad optics.
Bingo's response, "If you get an NHL player that good in the 6th round, I don't care if he's related to Adolph Hilter". Gold!
