They also see a "dishwasher cleaner." I have used it a few times as it works really well to get rid of hard water deposits. As with the other methods above (which proably work just as well but cheaper) you run it in a cycle with no dishes.
Make sure the drainage pipe is higher than the drain outlet. My dishwasher (Bosch) had the drain pipe running along the floor and it would not drain properly and it would start to stink.
I read this thread, Both I hate Hulse and redforever mention the drain pipe. I did that and it solved the problem.

Sorry to bump, I just had to acknowledge this post. I regaled the premise of this thread, the helpful responses and then this particular comment to a few people over the last few days and it has caused copious amounts of laughter. Very well done.
