Now heading towards 85 points with the 8th place team on a 88 point pace ... basically right back in it. Lose the last three on the trip and they clearly fall back though.
Win streak is great, but they have to keep pushing it.
well even if they take only a handful of points the rest of the roadtrip, they have got/kept themselves in the mix...now really it depends on putting back together a semblance of a home record
Every time I see the list I get depressed a little. All the teams who are currently in a playoff position are good teams. Only semi questionable one I think would be Columbus but as I have been watching them play quite a bit on center ice, they are pretty damn good. Flames need to not let their recent win streak go to their head, they need to continue to play good hockey.

fair enough. if the Flames can't be one of the top 3 teams in the NW I figure they don't deserve to go...and I think all 3 ahead of them still have some flaws and could be catchable. obviously Flames have to brush up on their divisional record
Location: I ain't playing nose tackle in a 3-4 defence

Actually Flames just have to brush up on their record against Vancouver. The team has been adequate against the other 3 teams posting a 6-3-2 record. That would project to like 14-7-3 over 24 games and thats a pretty decent mark (especially if all the wins are in regulation) It's that 0-2-1 vs. Vancouver that serves as a kick in the junk.

And I maintain that it is only a matter of time before that changes. Vancouver won two of those games on bounces, and in the 4–1 victory took advantage of a Flames team that was on its way to rock-bottom. I think that with how the Flames have played in even the last ten games, there is no reason to think that they cannot beat the Canucks.

Even that game was closer than the score indicates. I was at that game and Vancouver's only decent goal was the Naslund-to-Mitchell goal where our defence stood around like those CBE statues.

Colorado, Colombus, St. Louis and Minnesota are all teams that are very questionable. I am not saying we aren't either but those are four teams that Calgary should be able to finish higher than.
What concerns me most is that Anaheim is so low right now. With their team now and adding Nieds and Selanne I can't see them finishing out of the play-offs which means we have to probably beat 2 of the four teams mentioned above.

But why limit it to only those four? Dallas and Vancouver should be included among the teams that the Flames can potentially leapfrog as well. 2/6 is not nearly as unreasonable as 2/4.

We can worry about team A and team B and team C until we're blue in the face ... bottom line is Calgary has jumped three teams and have two left to hop for a playoff spot (a big move in team count), and are trending back towards that playoff line (85 points is a nice boost over the 75 from 10 days ago)
Get that trend above 90 and things should sort out well.
I really think aside from Detroit, LA, and Phoenix every other team still has a shot at the playoffs and falling out of the playoffs.
The eigth place team has 34 points, 2nd in the conference is 4 points up at 38 and the 13 seed has 30 points with games in hand. With about 50 games to go, that is very tight. This will likely be a very exciting season right to the end.
As a side note, the amazing thing from watching Detroit this year is the other team is always playing Detroit's style. Will any team be able to force them to play a different type of game?

Another way of stating the same thought and is apropos this time of year, "If "if's" and "but's" were candy and nuts we'd all have a wonderful Christmas".
You can't worry about or control anything this early in the season, but you can do yourself a lot of good by beating teams in your own division and teams in the West.
One could argue that the points up for grabs against St. Louis and Columbus are more important than the previous 4 games against teams in the Eastern conference.
One of many who is too boring; thinks that there should be rules regarding grammar in custom user titles, and also makes moderators wonder if there is a charachter limit here. I mean come on- you would think that would be a limitation in the software

I really don't see why adding one or two players who have been dormant for half the year suddenly makes Anaheim world beaters. Yeah, we are talking about elite players, but skating and practicing does not get one into game shape. Very often, hold out players take a very long time to get their timing back.
