Thumbs up Christmas Eve Mass

...or is that masse?

Y'know, Christmas Eve church service, where they light candles, and sing Christmas carols.

I am looking for a big cool church to go to on Christmas Eve, for Christmas Mass, hopefully one with a lot of tinted windows. Anyone know of any big, cool churches that are holding it this year?

There are a few really nice churches in Calgary, but I do not know if they are conducting Christmas Mass.

I dont really know, but the obvious answer would probably be St. Mary's Cathedral.

I imagine they must conduct a christmas mass.

Last year I went to midnight mass at St. Peter's Basilica. Yes, it was boring.

If you're looking for the largest midnight mass in the city... go to St. Mary's Cathedral. Go an hour and a half early though if you want to get a decent seat.

On a side note, I was able to attend the the late Pope John Paull II''s second last midnight mass at the Vatican. It was a night I will never forget. I remember I was in the square lining up to get past the Italian security guards and then Pope John Paul II came out on the balcony and everyone started cheering and almost all the youth were screaming "we love you papa!".

That lazy bum Ratzenburger (or whatever his name is) never bothered coming outside. Probably because it was so effing cold. Rome gets cold in ways that surprise even me. And I've been to Tuktoyuktuk.

St. Mary's should fit the bill.

My church is far short of a major church, but has very good Christmas Eve services that usually fill up and have a good vibe going.
Edit: I'll give you details if you ask for them

Midnight mass at Knox United used to be a family tradition of mine. Now we don't spend Christmas in Calgary.

I can imagine why they wouldnt like it, the attendance difference between any given sunday and Easter and Christmas masses is probably huge, there would be a sea of faces that they wouldnt recognize, or worse, recognize but havent seen in a long time.

On the other hand, they should almost be glad that people at least still come to those masses. Would it better if people never went at all?

I'm not certain they have the authority to make that call.

They'll forgive me, you just wait and see....

After I moved out on my own I no longer felt obligated to go to church. Of course, my parents constantly invited me, but I'd only ever show up for xmas and easter. Until one year I read an article in RD about us so called "C&E's".
Apparently, regular attendees look down on people like me who are only showing up because it means something to someone else (parents or whoever).
I haven't been to church since. Well, except for midnight mass last year. And weddings.
The attitude problems that some of these religious people have are what keeps me away. Even before I read that article, it was pretty apparent whenever I'd go to my parents' church that the regulars were looking down their nose at me and my sister and my evil (at the time) JW girlfriend.
Screw 'em. I've got better things to do than get questioned and receive condescending remarks twice a year.

I'm kinda with 4x4. I can't stand the politics within churches. I was fairly active within my church this year, but since we have band practice on Sundays I can't go anymore. I'm interested to see how people react to my being there on Christmas Eve

I dont worry about it. If they want to be condescending then let them. I havent run into it before, but if they want to make an issue of it then I always have a sarcastic remark or two.

I'm guilty of this too, but you have to understand that it's natural for regulars to resent you when you show up for Christmas mass once a year for the same reason you show up for the Santa Claus parade. Other than adding an air of superficiality to what, to them, is a sacred occasion, you are also taking up all the seats and not even bothering to flip a fiver into the donation basket (should really be a 20, by the way.)
