Are there any good mexican restaurants? Not the Taco Time/Taco Bell type. I was reading some of the reviews online and most of them are contradicting. I haven't tried any yet for fear that they might not be up to standards. What do you suggest?
I think they're both very good, just different.. Salt and Pepper is more casual with casual food, while El Sombrero is more expensive with fancier dishes.

Juan's on 8th Ave and 2nd Street SW. It's kinda in the basement by Scotia Tower but the food is authentic, the service is good, and the portion sizes large. Bring your belt with the extra notches!
Is there a Julio's Barrio down there, it is not too bad up here in Edmonchuk.
Yeah there is one at the corner of Memorial and 10th, it's a little bit above Taco Bell quality. And before anyone mentions it, Sante Fe Grill is not a good Mexican restaurant either.
Is the Latin Corner considered Mexican? I had a pretty good meal there a couple years ago. My steak came out in the middle of a sword while the waitress blew a whistle, caught me a little off guard. A little on the pricey side, but the live music was a nice touch.

I will third Juan's. They also have smokin' hot salsa dancing babes on Saturdays.
El Sombrero.
I second this one, but only if you can't make it to Salt and Pepper.
I have a friend from Mexico, lived in Canada 20 years now, and she said the only Mexican restaurant in Calgary close to being authentic is El Sombrero.
On a semi-related (latin-american food) topic, has anyone been to one of the churriscaria (brazilian bbq) restaurants here? I had this at a farmer`s market in LA and fell in love with it, and I recently read that there`s apparently two in calgary now... one connected with Smuggler`s, and one in the Forest Lawn area.
