Looking to add a few more picks, the Flames traded their second rounder (47th) to San Jose for a fourth and fifth rounder. The Sharks immediately used the pick to grab Matt Carle while the host Predators snared Shea Weber two picks later. "We had those guys in that range but the bottom line is we didn't take them," said Button yesterday, one week before the entry draft goes in Columbus, Ohio.
yeah...its too bad - accumulating picks isnt' a bad thing, but a second for a 4th and a 5th? Doesn't seem like a move up to me...
a second for a three and 5 or 2 fours seems more even...
I like the spin on Fata too..."highly regarded"? that was a total reach at number 6...DT, went about where he was supposed to go (though samsanov was there too at the time and we passed)...but Fata?!

No actually Fata was highly regarded, in large part due to his speed. And 6th overall is about where people projected him to go. Infact the only knock on Rico Fata was his hockey sense.

Yeah the Flames had the potential to grab a lot of good ones that day with picks 9, 39, & 47. But than again Nashville who did eventually get Weber had 2 second round picks before they did grab him. Similar with San Jose and Carle as they passed over him at 43, but did trade to get the 47 pick. Overall after Phaneuf the Flames did not do very well at the 2003 draft given what they had to work with. Still in the end if Ramholt can carve out an average career and you get Phaneuf it would be a successful draft. But no doubt, it could have been a great draft had say Phaneuf, Bergeron, and Weber all been selected.

One of many who is too boring; thinks that there should be rules regarding grammar in custom user titles, and also makes moderators wonder if there is a charachter limit here. I mean come on- you would think that would be a limitation in the software
I believe the trade for our 47th pick was actually for Colorado's 97th pick (a third rounder, which we got Ryan Donally) and two San Jose picks (5th round, 143rd, Greg Moore, and 6th round, 173rd, Tyler Johnson).
So our local boy, the trained professional that doesn't think bloggers or fan sites are worthy... is once again.... off the mark. You would have thought him indicating we got Donally and Moore would have noticed that they were not from the 4th and 5th rounds respectively.
Yea, and what if we grabbed Coburn or Kostitsyn (the two guys above and below Phaneuf) like many were predicting instead of Phaneuf. I'm COMPLETELY satisfied with that draft.
I found it odd that in a column on Flames drafting, he lists "Flames players that were later-round gems", and only one was drafted by the Flames :
excerpt:
Here's a few Flames players that were later-round gems:
- Miikka Kiprusoff: Fifth round, 116th overall selection by San Jose in 1995.
- Stephane Yelle: Eighth round, 186th overall selection by New Jersey in 1992. - Matthew Lombardi: Third round, 90th overall selection by Flames in 2002.
I don't know the Flames draft history well enough to suggest actual Flames picks he could have listed there instead...

The Flames haven't been able to pull diamonds from the rough like they used to. David Moss was a 7th round pick, 220th overall though. The only other Flames drafted by this club and playing in Calgary were all top 100 picks.

Toni Lydman, a 4th rounder, would be the only real good example in the last 10+ years. Some recent picks have a shot, like McElhinney, and Van der Gulik along with the aforementioned Moss.
Juuso Puustinen and Matt Keetley are a couple other recent mid/late rounders that look interesting

Perhaps it does, but really past a certain cutoff point in the draft the players do become very even where the differences between about 5-6 players becomes a case of pick em.
