From the desk of the illustrious Devils GM Steve R.:
To Florida:
D Tom Gilbert
NJ 2nd round pick 2008
To New Jersey:
C Doug Weight
and
To Colorado:
C Vern Fiddler
To New Jersey:
G Mike Dunham
We really like both of these trades for our team. Tom Gilbert did break in to that "other" professional league on their AHL team, the Oilers, but he was way down on our depth chart and did not figure into our plans, and giving up one of our many 2008 2nd rounders was not a big pain. Doug Weight will boost our forward ranks for next season, and should contribute hugely with his offense.
We needed a backup goalie for next season, which explains the acqisition of Dunham. Ideally, we'd have acquired a backup through UFA this off-season on a one-year deal but this way we have guaranteed ourselves a serviceable backup at a low cost in terms of our roster. Fiddler unfortunately became expendable with the acquisition of Doug Weight.
Thanks to Martin and James for quick and painless negotiations.
If I may toot the collective horn of the commish team for a moment, so far the new rules are playing out as we had hoped with some lower end teams getting an opportunity to add some quality players for real good prices.
Excellent!

I hear there's some real good players in Carolina looking for future employment too
I agree, Grant. The new rules are really spreading out the talent.

Well Eddie the eagle has moved on. I had a stupid watchdog warning and I was under the impression that I needed to get under teh Cap level Soon. Since that is not the case we will be taking our time in moving Shanahan and Murray.
