How many Kids CAN Sutter promote w/out losing their effectiveness?
So there my question, with the recent ramblings with promoting our AHL guys to the NHL so they can play in Playfair's system being the 'talk', I really agree with it. I for one, dont see Playfair going anywhere because Sutter seems to favour him. So if guys like Taratukhin, Boyd, Nystrom, Prust, Krahn (because he can be had cheaply and may not be that bad for 10-15 games) get promoted, is that too much in a year?
Regehr (1.88) - Stuart (4.2?)
Phaneuf (0.785) - Hamrlik (3.5?) one year deal?
Hale (0.80) - GIordano (0.50)
Kipper (3.33)
Krahn (0.65)
Total = 43.75M
* Numbers are hypothetical
But this just kind of shows the advantage of having kids on the roster (cap space), and they are all NHL ready and more than capable of playing the bottom 6 lines for us next year.
(Warrener and Zyuzin must go to save the ~4M in cap space)
Maybe Tilley can comment on the possibility and effectiveness of a line-up like this?
I don't think you get much more than a bag of pucks for conroy at this point. His salary is just too high.
Back on topic though, I think 5 or 6 rookies in the lineup is just too much. Ask the Oilers. I think you see a backup goalie and 2 others. The rest of the holes will be filled with UFA's.
I'd like to see some new faces from the farm get spots with the Flames as well. The only ones who have legitimately won a spot in training camp for the last few years is Giordano and Phaneuf. Lombardi and Moss got their spots through injury.
In this new NHL it's harder to see a natural progression of farmhands moving up because of the UFA wildcard. Sutter doesn't yet know who will be interested in coming to Calgary and who he can fit in his cap. The situation is pretty fluid and may remain so up to training camp.
Oh yeah, you forgot Conroy.
Location: Hoping Timmy Thomas and The Hockey Gods stop a soccer team from winning The Stanley Cup.

Actully Lombardi came out of nowhere and won a spot on the club. All we really knew about him is that we basically swapped Stoll for him because both went back into the draft.
I went to all the training camp stuff that year, and Lombardi forced his way onto the club with a very, very strong camp.

Oilers suck.

I'm not saying Lombardi didn't have a great camp but if Reinprecht hadn't been injured, there wouldn't have been a spot for him. With Phanuef and Giordano, Sutter had made room, if they earned it.
Am I the only one that doesn't think Boyd will make the team out of training camp next year?
Not for lack of skill but lack of bulk and strength. I beleive he is still one year away and if he is thrown in there prematurly then he will be weaker on the puck than Kobasew was this year.
But with regards to the kids that will come up and play I think Tarathukin and Prust will grab two spots but I think we will sign 1 or 2 FAs up front that will take othe rpotential spots away.

If that many kids show they are capable in camp then I could see most if not all of them up. Much will depend on postional needs and what the roster looks like before camp as much could change in that time. I see at least one of those spots being taken up by an UFA if they are the right fit maybe more. Sutter probably will have enough players in place to compete for the final 2 or 3 spots at camp going on how he has put things together the past couple seasons.
I fully expect to see Prust, Boyd, Taratukhin and one of Germyn or Van der Gulik up full time next year. This team sorely lacked the youthful enthusiam it needed to kick it in the ass from time to time. Those guys should bring just that.

Boyd will get a long look based on his great seasons in the NHL and AHL.
Taratukhin and Germyn will get a long look as Boyd's linemates in Omaha AND because they, also, led the Knights in scoring.
Tim Hambly will probably also get a long look, but there's a logjam of capable defensemen, so he'll probably spend most of the year in Omaha.
I think Prust, Boyd, Taratukhin and Germyn are locks for next year. Actually Boyd is iffy, the guy needs to build up alot of strength over the summer IMO.
I have to question the mention of Nystrom. Will the Flames offer him a contract to retain his rights? Gotta be better places to spend money with less risk.

I don't think he's run out his welcome yet. We'll probably need some grinder types to round out our team. One of the reasons he stayed in the minors was his large contract. He wasn't worth the money but with a new minimum contract he may have a spot.

Well the off-season is the best time to add bulk/strength and I'm sure the Flames will have a program designed for him. So it depends on how much he is able to do in that department over the new few months. I agree right now he's not big enough, but that can change over the summer.
