Turn off on 103 (?) to Whyte, first block, see a group of 14 year old hookers. Next block, a guy's putting some sort of choke hold on his wife or girlfriend, and some guys trying to stop him. Next block, a cop car is in front of a club with its lights on, as they pull a couple guys out of a club. Next block, a group of homeless people hovered together. Next block, an ambulance is there, lights too (in fairness, could be responding to a resident, and not a stabbing?)
Honestly, never seen anything like it.

Find the chief leftist/socialist disturber.

Weren't you guys thinking about a new arena near that spot? Revitalize the area. Edmonton is so different .

This stuff happens in all major cities. You just happened down Whyte, probably on a Saturday night when it's the busiest part of town.
On a side note, there was a murder last night. 17 year old dead I believe.

What made you think it was murder. I read in the paper today that it was asuspected drunk driver, who hit a car full of teens, and killed one 17 year old. I think this is what your reffering to.

That's not what I'm referring to actually. No news link yet either.

I think a lot of you are missing the point. Is the poster not saying it's shocking this was Edmontons 'blue mile' during the playoffs?...the chain of events he described is way worse than anything i've ever seen on 17th ave in calgary...

No wonder I kept hearing sirens and what not... (I live just off whyte)
Trust me, you get used to it...
My brother lives in downtown edmonton, and i've been up to visit sometimes, and beside the homeless epidemic (not much different than here in cowtown) I never saw anything bad. The people are totally different, much more blue-collar type looking folk.
I must of been going through in the 1 time in history nothing bad was happening in that city
Some of the US per capita rates are insane for a first world country.

No your city is a little worse, it rivals and many times leads the continent in violent crimes and / or murders per captia. Edmonton is Different.
Edmonton is now the murder capital of Canada this year. Not exactly the kind of tag you want. Here are some stats in 2004.
Jacksonville Florida is similar in size to Edmonton and they had 104 murders and 6533 violent crimes in 2004. The U.S. average is 466 violent crimes per 100000 people and 5.5 murders per 100000 people. Edmonton in this same time period had 6598 violent crimes but only 39 murders.
Omaha, which is half the size of Edmonton had 20 murders in 2004 and 2600 violent crimes. Less crime but the same amount of murder per capita.
I came here in Edmonton's defence but once I actually pulled up crime stats I realized they actually are pretty high on a continental platform.
One of many who is too boring; thinks that there should be rules regarding grammar in custom user titles, and also makes moderators wonder if there is a charachter limit here. I mean come on- you would think that would be a limitation in the software
A week or two ago, a couple of the UofA Golden Bears Basketball team were walking down Whyte, one of the guys stops to tie his shoe, and him and his teammates get jumped and beat up for absolutely no reason.
Last time I did a pub crawl on Whyte, saw a women walking down the street get robbed at knifepoint. Crazy city.
