Default ShoutBox?

Hey, I saw this on another site, kind of cool. A website addition kind of a medium ground between a chat and message board. Check it out on this site:

http://www.gybo-v3.co.uk/portal.php

Would be really tough to moderate, but maybe throw it up while the games are on as a sort of game thread?

Thoughts?

there's been a few on a couple of boards I've moderated, and I don't think it's a particularly good idea.

It's sort of like a repuation system, in that it takes a way a lot of board traffic in the form of posts, and allows for a lot more 'throwaway' traffic that isn't particularly useful.

I think a karma type system would be ok, or some sort of repuation system for posts (though those become circle jerks aswell), but anything that allows you to make contact other forum members aside from PM and in posts really takes away from the forums. Replies which would normally go in the thread would go in there. Some think that's a good idea, but I think it takes away from discussion and consequently makes the forum appear less busy and attractive.

just the $.02
