Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
Per city report, Victoria Park option is targeted for a two-block area bounded by Olympic Way, 12th Avenue, 4th Street and 5th Street.

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
Currently the two block area is used for parking and owned, I believe, by the Stampede.

Ryan Pike @RyanNPike
City report does note that the area is within the Rivers CRL, could receive funding from that source.

Here is the Victoria Park Option report:
http://agendaminutes.calgary.ca/sire...1703372538.PDF

Looks like freeway meant this:

Quote:
Proposed Development Area
Administration, CMLC, CSEC and the Stampede have discussed locating a new event centre (comprised of an NHL level arena and ancillary services to be determined), immediately north of Stampede Park on a two block site bounded by 12 Avenue, 5 Street SE, 14 Avenue SE, and Olympic Way SE. The approximate 7.2 acre site is situated within the Stampede Master Plan area and is currently used for parking and roadway. Preliminary site planning and architectural investigations have determined that there is sufficient site area for an event centre with the same specifications and details as the event centre included as part of the CalgaryNEXT design.

An event centre, ancillary mixed-use parcels, and plaza space can be accommodated within the proposed development area. Any combination of these elements may be included in a final development program. Due to the nature of ongoing discussions amongst Administration, CMLC, CSEC, and the Stampede, detailed site planning, architectural studies, and renderings have not been prepared. It is anticipated that this work will be part of the formal negotiation process.

The proposed event centre development area is owned by the Stampede. Since the existing Saddledome is owned by The City and is situated within Stampede Park, the Stampede has indicated potential support for a land exchange. The specific terms and conditions of a land exchange are subject to further discussions. The proposed event centre development area is of particular relevance to the Stampede, as the site is located within an “Entertainment Zone” identified in the Stampede Master Plan. A new event centre development area that is designed in keeping with the surrounding urban context has the potential to benefit Stampede Park and the surrounding community.

The Rivers Community Revitalization Levy (CRL) District
The proposed event centre development area is located completely within the existing Rivers CRL District. This district, established in 2007, uses a CRL to pay for new infrastructure. Existing infrastructure funded by the CRL includes 4th Street Underpass, St. Patrick’s Island, Riverwalk, pedestrian bridges, urban squares and heritage buildings. CMLC recently reforecast
revenue generation for the remaining 10 year CRL period and determined that another $150 million in CRL revenue is anticipated. This revenue will be used to fund future infrastructure projects including: Greenline LRT streetscapes, 17th Avenue extension, cycle tracks, and RiverWalk. This infrastructure could be of great benefit to the Victoria Park site.

Summary
The Victoria Park community is well suited to new event centre development. Being located in the Rivers CRL District and within proximity of the proposed Green Line LRT, the area has received, and is targeted for a significant amount of public investment. A substantial amount of existing and planned private investment has also occurred in the area, as a result of concerted urban revitalization efforts. Additionally, commercial and entertainment related development adjacent to Stampede Park is both consistent with, and supportive of the Stampede’s growth objectives.

Yeah, that's the location we've all been speculating on. Makes the most sense since it's a huge open parking lot right now.

Those two blocks aren't very big. The footprint of the new building would barely be bigger than the Saddledome.

Should make sense, no?

Less seating. Most new arenas are smaller footprints than their predecessors, i think?

I know Target field in Minnesota is a tiny footprint but a tremendous design which maximizes space.

Could the stadium be added on once the Saddledome is demolished (and some parking removed)? Is there enough room?

"Plan B" has always been rink only and "some renovations" to McMahon.

Wow years of song and dance to get to where they should of been 5 years ago. Just glad we finally are going in the right direction.

That said with it next to the Saddledome are they going to tear it down and use that space for a year round entertainment district?

I just measured. It's pretty much the identical footprint as the Prudential Center in Newark.

Using the Google "measure distance" tool, the site is approximately 170x200m.

The main part of Rogers Place is 150x190m. The new arena in Detroit is about the same.

The Saddledome is one of the largest-capacity arenas in the league, so it doesn't really need a bigger space, it just needs to use the space better.

I don't know about specifically right over the saddledome, but there is technically enough land for a stadium on Stampede grounds. However, IIRC the stampede board has said they don't want that large of a building on their grounds, which is why there have been no discussion about moving CalgaryNEXT to Victoria Park.

It depends on what happens with the Olympic bid, I'd guess.

If we get the Olympics, we'll need two large arenas (one for hockey, one for figure skating/short track), so the Saddledome would need to survive until at least 2026.

Long term, I can't see both buildings being maintained. The Stampede could use an outdoor amphitheater to replace the Coke Stage, and that would be a perfect location for that.

Sorry guys - this is Plan B! NO stadium, only renos. Any die hard Stamps fans are going to be extremely disappointed. In fact, who know if they're even going to address that on Monday.

Man that bid talk has certainly disappeared hasn't it! I doubt that's going to happen now, given the huge cost for security, etc. Plus all the haters, lol.

The Saddledome also tapers in significantly from the roof (widest point) down to ground level, resulting in a building that's smaller than its footprint (or more accurately, "hat print") would suggest. There's some extra space tacked on at concourse level in a couple of places, but overall it's a very inefficient use of the available space.

Is anyone else concerned that Plan B will be a cheapo design? I'd LOVE to see something like Little Caesar's in Detroit but that's probably not realistic. I just love how they've approached their concourse areas - much better than edmonton IMHO.
