No more waiting, this is the perfect year to do it. The team has had #14 unofficially retired since he left, and with the upcoming rebuilding year, we might as well celebrate some of the past. Here is a reminder of the standing O in his last exhibition game:
I believe Fleury's outspoken nature has delayed the inevitable, but I think with all he has been through in life that is to be expected. In terms of history and importance to the team, put #14 in the rafters...and none of this "Forever a Flame" stuff. Do it right.
Hope this is a good discussion for the slow summer period!

I’m always amazed these sportscasters and announcers can call the game with McDavid’s **** in their mouths all the time.

I'm completely fine with the Flames not retiring anyone until the new arena is opened - at which point we retire Iginla's 12, then Fleury's 14 and Kipper's 34 alongside officially retiring Al Mac's 2, all with nice matching banners befitting the new arena.
Theoren Fleury, Jarome Iginla, Al MacInnis, Mike Vernon, Lanny McDonald, Miikka Kiprusoff as our retired jerseys makes sense to me.

He is still too much of a controversial public figure for this honour. He has done a lot of bad things and left a lot of hurt people behind. And he continues to say that he doesn't give a ... about what people say or think about him. He also said that he wouldn't have changed a thing in his past. Really, not a thing?
Theo should clean up his act and get really involved in some meaningful work for the community benefit. The appreciation and recognition will come eventually. I don't doubt for a second, most people at the Flames organization want to retire Fleury's number; but he needs to demonstrate that he is truly changed.

The new arena is not that close. My guess is that its 4 years away at the earliest. Like you said the flames will be able to retire Iggy, Kipper ect. in the new arena. I don't see them retiring multiple #'s in one year and i am not sure they would do a ceremony every year? I could see them doing one every other year and Fleury would be behind Iggy and probably Kipper. That could be a decade away for Fleury.
In the next 2 seasons the flames are not going to have a lot of meaningful games in the second half of the seasons. Maybe a good idea to retire #14 in the 2nd half of one of the next couple of seasons to fill up the dome for a night.
The main point is Fleury should have his # retired.

Basically what I understand from this post is that you want him to neuter his personality to be more politically correct before you're willing to forgive him, and you're taking literal some out of context quote and dissecting it to make him look bad. You can take a hike buddy.
Fleury also does plenty for the community..

Iginla probably won't retire for another 4-5 years - maybe more. I hope #34 and #14 are retired before then.
