This is something that I think we have to start recognizing more. If players want to sign huge, long-term blockbuster deals they are going to take a hit year after year in what effectively amounts to inflation.

When Iginla signed his $7M contract that was Franchise player money. Right now the highest paid player in the league next season will be earning double that and hes a defenceman. Right now Iginla is tied for 23rd highest paid NHL player.

If this is whats happened in the 7 years since the lockout, where do you think Franchise player money will be when guys like Kovalchuk, Parise and Weber's deals are done?

The Weber deal if I remember correctly is worth 7.8 million a year. All that has happened is teams have realized they can put the money up front and the player will gladly accept it. If Weber can take that additional 30 million dollars he received up front and double it over 10 years (basically he would need about a 7.2 percent return) he actually has a 14 year 140 million dollar contract, or 10 million a year. All teams have done is realized they can throw the money on the front end of any deal.

he won't be having 30 million to invest.... President Obama wants to take 40% of that off the top. so he will be doubling 18 M over 10 years...

To get a 7.2 real return he has to make over 10% to pay the dividend tax.

I sure would be interested how these huge contracts are managed for taxation purposes.... what sort of expense and charities and write offs someone like Weber (or anyone making over 1M / yr) uses.

Well without derailing the whole conversation, he would pay 40% no matter what year he received the money. Having the money up front is still a far better financial position for Weber.

If it were me, I'd spread the contract out a bit more to get under that $15M tax bracket.
