I was kinda hoping he'd find his way onto the main team. I thought now was his time to shine. I'd have kept him over Babchuk at this point, he seemed just fine when he was up with the big club last year.

Good move for Wilson. Gio went this route and it paid dividends for him. Hope to see him back in a Flames jersey again.

No his NHL contract is still a valid contract.

It is up to the Flames to take steps to terminate the contract (if they haven't already)

i don't think they're going to, it gives them flexability to see if he develops over in russia and flexability when it comes to playing him next year. that's how it's good news, he likely wasn't going to play a lot this year.

Hopefully he pulls a Giordano and comes back better then before. Sucks for the Heat, but I think this will benefit Clay and the Flames in the long run.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see this as some stepping stone in development, like he's in the Flames' long-term plans. The guy is 29 years old.

Terminate the contract to open a contract spot.

Yeah, this sounds like a Staffan Kronwall-type situation to me. I could be wrong, but it wouldn't surprise me if Wilson still counts against the Flames books.

It really sucks to lose Wilson. He was the offensive lifeblood of the Heat's defensive group. He got over his diving, whining, laying-on-the-ice tactics within a couple of weeks under Ward. I began to like him after that. Every time he came down to the to the top of the circles in offensive zone pressure situations, you knew a goal was coming. It was almost that predictable.

I wish him the best in the KHL, but man that really sucks for the Heat. All of those AHL d-men signings make sense now.

The Flames loaned Kronwall to a European team. If Wilson walks away from his NHL contract to go to Russia without the Flames lending him there then the situations are very different.

Age means little when the playoffs roll around, look at Martin Gelinas for instance, turned 34 during the 04' run, it all comes down to taking just one shot, one goal to win the Stanley Cup. 34 year old Mike Mottau has been an NHL regular these past 5 seasons after 7 years in the minors.

This is what erks me. The KHL has no problem taking a player under contract in the NHL from us. But when a player is under contract for them, they fight to the nail to keep him or ask for mass compensation. I just don't get how Ramo would never be allowed to leave his team, but Wilson is brought in with open arms.

I also don't see this as a good thing for the flames. He would have helped the heat out if he did not make the big club.

Hopefully this works out with same results for Wilson and the Flames like when Gio went to the KHL.

tooth and nail. and i agree it seems like a double standard but i still really feel like he'll be back in a flames jersey next season.

I liked Wilson but had no desire to see us have a guy counting towards our 50 contracts playing in the KHL

He was unlikely to see a significant number of games in the NHL this year anyway... if any at all.

Good decision for him at this point of his career I think. He has maybe another 6 peak years to maximize his earnings in hockey. It is time to give up the NHL dream I think.
