Default Here's a summer thread for ya....

With the Olympics starting up, like many around here I'm sure, I've been thinking back to the amazingness of 2010 and our gold medal hockey teams. It's naturally led me to start thinking about 2014 and how we could possibly top that. What did I come up with? Four words.
Head Coach Don Cherry.
Now hear me out. Yes he gets a lot of hate for being old and senial but whatever. Love him or hate him there is no man who would be more determined to leave Russia with a gold medal. The man was everybody's first coach, and has helped define what Canadian Style hockey really is.
It would be put up or shut up time for HNIC lightning rod of controversy. It would also be one of the greatest swan songs of all time if he managed to win.
I'd still want Babcock, Hitchcock and who ever else behind the bench with him. Even if it meant Cherry being a puppet coach, just having him behind the bench would be priceless.

I don't think you'll find many coaches or players signing on for that team.

I say that as a guy who loves Cherry.

Rofl why do you want a ''puppet coach''? Don't you care about Canada taking home the Gold medal? I sure do. I want the team/coaches that will give us the BEST shot at doing so. If we have Cherry as a coach for nostalgic reasons, we might as well forfeit the game.

Gold Medal>>Puppet Coach because it might seem cool

A man who hasn't coached in 32 years seems like the logical choice for team Canada.

He's basically nothing more than a CBC mascot.

It would be embarassing to have him representing our nation at a formal level. People would think we were a country of bigots.

Sure, not logical. But if he could pull it off, it would make a great story. How many gold medals do we need? I say let him prove he knows his stuff.

As an American, I fully support the idea of Cherry coaching Team Canada. USA was so close last time, this could really work to the Americans' advantage.

In all seriousness, Americans don't have the hate for Canadian success the way Canadians do for us, so I'd rather see a solid Canadian team with a qualified coaching staff for tournament style play. The last thing I want for team Canada is to have a circus side show of coaching distract from the talent on their team. If USA isn't going to win gold, I want it to be Canada.

I think it would be more fun if we sent 2 teams for the men's hockey. More then enough talent to go for 2 medals hehehe.

Huh? I don't think Canadians hate seeing USA be successful. Of course we want to win over anyone, but it's been fun watching hockey grow in the USA.

Read the Olympic threads from 2010. Some comments were so brutal before the games even started that I chose to sign out until the Olympics were over. I couldn't understand why it there was so much negativity directed at the Americans. It was just rooting for USA to lose to everyone. I'm sure it got worse after the games started. I couldn't understand it. I think we are so similar, and I've met so many people from this board who are awesome people, I couldnt understand the deep rooted hate for Americans. It was disappointing. I chose to avoid any more of it so my opinion of Canadians wouldn't be changed.

Extrapolating the opinions of a vocal contingent of a message board is a poor way to form an opinion of a country as a whole.
