A motion before Sturgeon County council would ensure any future development of this kind would not be exempt from the normal development hearing process.
I suspect a lot of municipalities across the country will be taking their cue from this situation to do the same thing as well.
For amusement, I'll bleep these stories over to my two favourite County councillors in the rural area I live to see what they say.

Grow ops make for fine neighbours, they keep the yard clean and tidy and there is no noise or 3am visits from the cops, now a crack shack, thats bad juju.

So, what's stopping someone from flooding their backyard in the winter and making a rink just like this, except not so fancy-pants? Oh yah - nothing. Why should people worry that he's actually going to the trouble to set it up properly? Oh yah - because they are more worried about their property values than actually enjoying where they live.

All he has to do in the summer is put up a basketball net, and it's functional all over again.
Yeah that didn't make a lot of sense did it? Was going by the article which states: "frozen in February, melted by mid-March". 1.5 months - probably not written with edmonton in mind.
He should put up some ramps and build a skatepark in the summer months. Still a dumb idea in my opinion.
I know a family in Kelowna who have a year-round rink. Like fully functional. Smaller than NHL size though. The difference between them and fernando is that they have the space to build something like this.
I don't see how this is really any different from someone putting a pool in their back yard.
My only concern would be the lighting for the rink. If he installs baseball stadium flood lights, it would be an eyesore and an annoyance, otherwise, it doesn't seem like it would be too much of a big deal.

Nothing of course and I even believe the neighbour said in the story that other people in the neighbourhood have outdoor rinks but they aren't as big.
Just so we're clear...she then has no problem with the regular sounds of an outdoor rink. It's the parties with his Oiler friends she is apparently concerned about
Oh and that she can see it BECAUSE SHE HASN'T PUT UP A FENCE!
Oh and in the picture there is a basketball hoop in the background. Seems the pad is already being used for other things. It'll never be a rink where I live but next summer we are pouring about a 30' x 40' pad in our backyard so the kids can play basketball or whatever. Beats playing on the street or a sloped driveway.
I love how she pretends to be tolerant and say how she has no problems with outdoor rinks and loves hockey. Not you don't, you old bat. I bet she hates the fact that other people have backyard rinks and can't do anything about it. If anything, I bet Pisani's backyard looks better than hers.
Those excuses she makes are just lame. Worried about ex-NHLers playing all night shinny? Give me a break grandma. I guess it must upset her sleeping by 7pm schedule huh?
Loud pucks? Noise bylaws will cover that. Problem solved.
Bright lights? The "Don't be a dick" principle comes into play, aim them away from your neighbours' properties.
The "eye-sore" of a rink? GTFO, it's not your yard.

There is nothing more that I love than A-hole neighbours. Tell them to go to hell Fernando. It's entirely on your property, it is your right to do with it as you will, as long as it follows the bylaws. Neighbours don't like it, too bad.
You'd be surprised how many people are "empty millionaires". That is, they lease the Benz/RangeRover/BMW, then they beg, borrow and steal to scrounge enough cash for a massive mansion. Unfortunately, the houses are, in many cases, literally empty. It's all about keeping up with the Joneses.
I don't get the hate for leasing vehicles. Some people like a new car every three years. If that's what you choose to spend your money on, it's way cheaper to lease each time than to buy. Your monthly payments are lower and at the end of the term you can just walk away from it. For business purposes, you can usually claim higher expenses for leasing, compared to purchasing the vehicle and claiming CCA. Many people don't know anything about repairing cars, and don't want to have to go through this process when the car gets age on it. There are many reasons why people lease, and if you can afford it, why not?
For the record, I purchased a 2008 BMW X5 this year and paid with a cheque. I have leased one car in the past and wish I had leased the one I had before my current vehicle. I had a tough time trying to sell it and leasing would have cost me less over the six years I owned it.

I know the kind of people hes talking about. I dont think its any negative comment on people who lease or leasing in general, but there are people who enter into leases on vehicles that they cant afford simply for show, and they choose to continue leasing to maintain the illusion that they are wealthy.
