Any coin collectors out there?
The Saskatchewan Rough Rider coin issue in the WRGMG thread had me thinking.
Anyone collect coins? What do you collect? Any interesting pieces you have? Are you buying, perhaps selling anything?
Personally I have collected general world coins for decades, but also have some cool silver, gold and even platinum coins.
The gold Haida coin from 1997 is a well known and sought after Canadian coin. 22K gold, $200 face value.
Also have the Canadian Mints first square coin, the 2006 $3 beaver. Sterling silver with a gold plating.
And from a local perspective, the 2006 Pengrowth Saddledome. 99.99% silver, holographic.
Interesting hobby, and quite often are pretty darn good investments if you shop wisely!

I usually check my coins and keep anything older than me.
I have a few cool (not necessarily valuable) ones.
The best of my bunch is a Nfld penny produced before they joined confederation in 1949.

I've got a pretty good collection of coins. Books of pennies/nickels from 1920-now, lots of proof sets as well. My favorite is probably the troy ounce silver Flames coin from their cup win.
Does anyone know if places like Albern will buy coins from collectors? It seems like there aren't many places in Calgary that will buy coins.

They do buy coins Frank, but they might not be the best way to sell them (you won't get nearly what they are worth usually.) Kiijiji or eBay can be better options.

I bought the square coin pictured above when it came out, and it's one of my favourites. I also have various complete or nearly complete sets of small pennies, nickles, etc. I buy commemoratives that interest me for some reason, and I'm trying to complete my sets of circulation coins slowly, although the "key" dates are holding me back due to cost. I've also recently bought a few Newfoundland coins (50 cent pieces, mainly) which I think are pretty neat. Right now I'm definitely keeping my eye out for more NFLD coins and the older Canadian issues (pre-1930s)

I'd agree with Shawnski. Albern's not going to give you a great price. If you want to sell to a store, I'd try these guys. http://www.calgarycoin.com/ Realistically no store is going to give you anywhere near what you could otherwise get, since they have overhead to pay.
Otherwise, why not try posting them in the buy-sell here? Sounds like there's a few of us numismatists who'd be interested.

There are still silver coins (dimes/quarters) floating around. Keep an eye out for them! 1968 ones might or might not be 50% silver. You can tell the difference with a magnet. If the coin isn't attracted to the magnet, it is silver.
And also separate out any Canadian nickels that are 1981 or older. They are already worth almost double their face value because they are 99.9 % nickel.

I've been buying $20 silver coins from the mint lately. They cost what their face value is; $20. So there is no risk of losing a bunch of money. It's a good way to start a bit of a collection that has some real value.

Still have the silver content of the coin itself on those. Win/win when you could get a pure silver coin, $20 face for $20 each, shipped to your door. Although the second coin in that series had a modest shipping charge.

I have a 1941 NLFD nickel in my possession, it is a little bent where somebody used it turn a screw.

Dammit! I just noticed the third coin in that $20 set was released and has already sold out! What the heck, I usually get an email from the Mint about them.

I have a small collection that I keep for my son. The biggest component is likely the uncirculated 1967 Centennial sets. He has 10, incuding 5 in a sealed (as in never opened) shipping box from the mint. While I doubt we have a diving goose, they are nice coins anyway.

I bought a pile of the 1967 and earlier proof like sets (for the silver content) just before silver took off. I have since seen a ton of them cut up and sold on eBay separately. Morons! Good for anyone else though that keeps them intact.

Also have a bunch of rolls of the 73 quarter, the mounted police one. The grandmother used to keep them, I called them Quarter Horses, these are circulated and worth, I would guess 25 cents each.

There are a few rare ones that have a "large bead/bust" and are worth more.
Here are pictures of the two styles in this link....

That said, you never know who is willing to pay for the regular ones on eBay!
Edit, here is another pic.

I collect, but only a few mint coins. Usually stuff I find or trade.
My favorites are my counterfeit loony and 1906 penny I found.

I collect all coins and put them in a piggy bank. I was struck by Jewish lightning when I was young.

I have a bunch of old coins in my safety deposit box, I have no idea of the value.
Hmmm, maybe I'll have to check them out...
