we have not heard much about Cgy's new rink. I hope they get tons of funding. It just means we'll get the same treatment. If we can pay 25mil for a bridge that several hundred people have an actual use for, we should get that much more for a rink 100k would appreciate.
The bridge doesn't charge $35 to $200 a ticket to use it.

Get out of this thread if you're going to turn it into a Peace Bridge rant. No one wants to hear it.
It's not really a peace bridge rant, it's comparing the utility the public would get from a NHL rink vs a bridge.
I'm pretty conservative fiscally but I see the value in the AB gov't pitching in for a rink. The Saddledome is a dump with long lines. The seating bowl is like a morgue, and it has to be one of the worst stadiums in all major sports on this continent for amenities and entertainment around the rink. I'm pro a top tier rink, even if it has some public money in it.
Unless the city that kicked in 10% of the costs gets a 10% cut of the revenues.
That's not the way that cities and provinces work (or states, for that matter): they provide money for private enterprises from public pockets. The private enterprise then gets the profits, the city/province/state gets the tax base and the public gets to pay enormous prices for tickets.
Then, when the private enterprise fails, the taxpayer gets to pick up the tab again. For those in doubt, cf. City of Glendale / Phoenix Coyotes.
If private enterprises can't get their hands on public money, nothing happens.

Now you're just being dramatic. It's not great, but it's nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be.
We could definitely take some basic ideas from this.
Instead of adding a +15 walkway, make the building span the road.
Put the arena right next to a major roadway so we can avoid the long cattle line from the LRT to arena. I still think the stampede will install chutes and we'll all be branded one day. Free natchos on the other side and we won't even care.
It would be nice if the Flames could put a new football stadium downtown close to the new arena. It would be a lot nicer if they funded it all on their own as well.

I'll take a branding for a lifetime supply of free Dome nachos

Terrible design, looks like a slug or something that came out of me before I got to work today.
I live in Edmonton so it's really funny to see people get so excited about their next "answer" to why the downtown sucks so bad here. Something to think about: the photo projection has 4-5 new highrise office towers placed into it that don't exist, and that are not slated to be built by anyone. The city expects this to stimulate all sorts of economic growth downtown and become a "hub"; the problem is that if you know the are they are about to build in, it's one of the worst areas in the city.

So it's kinda the same deal that Calgary has in regards to the East Village?
Gotta start somewhere if you want to revitalize an area. The arena would be a good kick start to get activity going around there.
