Valery Vasilyev, who won two Olympic and eight world titles as a member of the great Soviet Union team in the 1970s and 80s, has died at the age of 62, the Russian ice hockey federation (FHR) said on Thursday.
Heart and kidney failure. Played in the 72 series. Considered one of the great defensemen of all time.
Too bad the Hockey Hall of Fame is so biased towards NHLers (like Bernie Federko). Would have been nice to recognize some great hockey players while they were still alive.

I thought he had got a defective tv. The technology was in its infancy. It took a long time to figure that one out."

Those old Soviets probably didnt lead the healthiest lives.
I would have thought that the old Soviets would have lead the healthiest lives in a way with their training programs, granted after they stopped playing hockey I imagine that the vodka likely didn't help.
I was wondering about this.. they had a minute silence for him before Game 4 of the Dynamo Moscow-Avangard Omsk final series and I went to wikipedia at the time and they hadn't updated it yet.
Seems fitting he played his whole career for Dynamo Moscow and he died on the ay they're hosting the final.

The other thing to remember too is that they probably took some pretty hefty physical tolls on their body with poor equipment and lots games.

One of many who is too boring; thinks that there should be rules regarding grammar in custom user titles, and also makes moderators wonder if there is a charachter limit here. I mean come on- you would think that would be a limitation in the software

There is an International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston and an IIHF Hall of Fame - to which Valisiliev was inducted in 1998.
The HHOF in Toronto isn't the only one, and it has clearly long been dedicated to North American hockey.

If they are calling it the hockey hall of fame, it shouldn't just be the NHL IMO. It will probably grind my gears until Makarov gets in. I fully expect as the old guard passes on you'll see more and more international stars entered (as well as WHA, women, disabled athletes, etc).
In the meantime, I wouldn't gripe if they changed the name to the NHL Hall of Fame.
