That would give me more cap space to go for it over the next 4-5 years.
If the core is younger/ not quite ready to contend then Toews and Kane would be the choice.

The rest of your team looks like hot garbage!

Getzlaf and Perry. Size and skill. Goal scorer and playmaker. Grit. Cheaper. Put Getzlaf and Perry on the Hawks and that team would be a lock for the Cup.

Starting any new team I take Kane and Toews. Adding to the flames current roster I take Getzlaf and Perry.

You could win with either tandem. On the ice it's pretty much a tie.
I'd take Getzlaf/Perry on my team. I have a hard time cheering for a guy who beat the #### out of a 70 year old cabbie.

To build a franchise, I'd take Kane and Toews because they're younger.
If it was for a single game against a team of hockey playing cartoon aliens, playing for the fate of humanity ala Space Jam, I'd take Getzlaf and Perry.

Toews and Perry if there was that choice.
Although Perry is the type of player that other teams hate, he is pretty effective and you can see that he cares about winning.

It's a tough decision, but Getzlaf/Perry for me. Mostly because of their size, but also because I love a pest and Perry fills that role perfectly.

That's a tough one since both duos are excellent. Ultimately, you'd probably have to pick Toews/Kane, but only by a slight margin. Getzlaf/Perry are also a very special combination of grit, size & Skill.

Getzlaf is a great player, but looking unstoppable for a few games doesn't mean he finally deciding to be the best player on the ice.
Mason Raymond can look unstoppable for 3 games in a row.

Interesting part here is that Getzlaf/Perry are looked at as the most dominant duo in the league, etc, etc....and yet they haven't had very much success outside of the regular season the last 5 years.
The Hawks have been VERY successful for 5 years.
So if you want to make decisions based on actual playoff performance, nobody would take Getzlaf/Perry over Toews/Kane.

The difference is Getzlaf is actually recognized as an elite player. Raymond is not.

There are more than two players on a team.

The thing that separates Kane from a lot of other players in the league is his killer instinct. The guy doesn't just want to win, he wants to be the guy that actually beats you.
Getzlaf, Perry and Toews all have the skill to beat you, but Kane salivates at the thought of being the one holding the gun, and that scares the daylights out me when he's on the ice in OT.

I have watched Ryan Getzlaf for a number of years. I've seen him play, junior and pro... Mason Raymond, you're no Ryan Getzlaf.

Sure he can. In fact he is among many players who can get hot for 2-3 games and score 6 goals.
The point is that if you want to pick two players to build your team, you have to look at the overall success of those two players.
Toews/Kane and simply blowing away Getzlaf/Perry in every category that counts the last 5 years.
Look at the Ducks record since 2007 when they last won the cup.
7 years, 2 playoff misses, 3 losses in the 1st round, 2 losses in the 2nd round.
Hawks.
Last 7 years. 1 playoff miss, 2 cups, 2 losses in 3rd round, 2 losses in 1st round.

I agree with everything you're saying except that Mason Raymond (ie. any player) can be dominant. Sure he could score a bunch of goals and get hot but very few players in the league can dominate play like Perry and Getzlaf, when they're hot, in their prime.

As other have mentioned it's a team game. Did you expect the Ducks to win last year when there was a 40 point drop-off between Getzlaf and Perry and the rest of the team? With a top D pairing that were 21 and 19 years old? With Hiller as the starting goalie heading into the POs?
What are the "categories" you are relying upon? Are they all team based?
