I would've subbed in Sather for Garth Snow. Bringing in Leddy and Boychuk was a huge reason why they had the season they did and improved an area that they needed a big upgrade in.

Snow should have made that list, without a doubt.
Looking at those candidates, it should go to Yzerman. Some shrewd GMing over the last few years.

No way Sather should be in this after handing out so many bad contracts. Maybe Armstrong or Poile instead.

Yzerman's got a good case, but Murray's got a very strong argument: Years of building that roster up, and from 2014-15:
Kesler for Sbisa/Bonino
Depres for Lovejoy
Sekac for Smith-Pelly
Picked up Wisniewski as a depth player

It may be a fluke, but its hard to argue with the results -- all three teams in the conference finals.

I would have agreed with you until I read this on NHL.com:
"After leading Tampa Bay to the Conference Finals in 2010-11, his first season in charge, Yzerman oversaw the rebuild to a roster that has returned to the final four with just two holdovers from the 2011 squad, cornerstone center Steven Stamkos and defenseman Victor Hedman. "
Yzerman rebuilt that entie TB team in 4 years. That's pretty damn impressive for a first time GM

I'm going with Murray. Always makes the trade that favors him.

Ruined them all the way to the conference finals. Hopefully our GM can ruin us in that manner one day.

I hope we never have a GM who runs us like Sather runs the Rangers. The Rangers have two things that allow them to bury their mistakes... a #### load of money and a destination that will always attract good free agents.

Bob Murray. Look at their young defense. Amazing. Among the best at drafting AND trading in the league.
Sather and Yzerman are good too though.

I would add "very timely amnesty buyouts" in wade redden and brad richards.

How does a #### load of money help the burry mistakes in this new CBA?

Murray won last year already...
i'd be surprised if he won two years in a row, since you're essentially rewarding him for what he has done over a calendar year.

I feel the same way when someone goes on about how screwed the Bruins are and how they're in such a crappy position.
Well sure, but along that path they won a Stanley Cup. I wish to every higher power that the Flames could be a team that finished out of the playoffs this season and is screwed cap wise going into next, if it meant we won a cup in 2011.
People forget how hard it is to win a cup in this league sometimes, and that it's really the ultimate goal. If you asked me if I'd rather build a team that
a) struggles for 5 years, becomes a contender for one and wins the cup, then struggle for years after, or;
b) a well built, solid contender that's always in the Stanley cup picture, but never quite makes it, however is a solid playoff team for ten years?
I'll take A every time, and to take B would be insanity.

Chiarelli didn't have to make a bunch of poor decisions because the Bruins won the cup 4 years ago. Not sure what his mistakes since then have to do with their championship team in 2011.
Sather is in a different spot as he's trying to win now. Most of the trades he's made are of that mandate. He's also won most of his trades and managed the cap well.
Chiarelli took a winner and made it a mediocre also-ran AND left them in cap hell. Completely different situation.

There are several ways i can think of off the top of my head.
- you can trade a player and retain 50% of his salary. or
- you can trade a player plus retain salary for an injured player who won't count against your cap(like Toronto did with Clarkson).
- you can sign a player to a one way contract. thus paying him regardless of where he plays(only anything over ~925,000 counts against the cap).
- you can still buy out a player and have his contract spread out over twice the length.
I'm not CBA expert so feel free to correct anything in my post that isn't correct.
