The Rangers are thriving in his absence, the Canucks made the playoffs in his absence.
Him leaving has been the best thing to happen to any of the teams hes coached. If anything I wonder why anyone ever thought he was a good coach.
He's won a Calder Cup, a Stanley Cup, two Presidents Trophies and a Jack Adams. He was wrong in how he strategically used players on the Canucks, but he's proven he used to be able to coach

He used the Sedins etc. In a role that ended up backfiring on him, but part of that blame has to go to the players themselves. Toews, Getzlaf, Bergeron, Kopitar, etc all thrive in the leadership role he wanted his stars in Vancouver to take on so that they could not only make the playoffs but do damage there as a collective 20 man unit.
Lest we forget, Tortorella had the 2012 Rangers in the ECF too.

So did Mike Keenan. But times change.
He's been a blowhard the last few years and ran his teams down as a result.

I was hoping the oilers would hire him. It would have helped to refuel the battle of Alberta. Also because the oil and him deserve each other, both no good and living on their past glory.

Some coaches just don't fit with certain teams, anyone who watched NHL hockey could tell that was a brutal fit in Vancouver.

Torts is very entertaining as a panelist, and I like watching him. That said, some of the same things that make him a good panelist, have made him a worse coach in his recent coaching history. He's too fiery and forceful. He gets people angry at him too easily. Not just the opposition or the media, but the schtick wears thin very quickly on today's players. I wouldn't be surprised if he's made management around him angry. The game has passed him by and his personality is too big.
Maybe he might do better in a small market US town, but I knew it was going to be a failed experiment in Vancouver. Called it when he got his five years, he wouldn't finish his contract. Didn't think it'd be after one though! I did think two was a possibility though. I knew it'd be a mess. He was always trashing Canada, and was never good with the media. And he chooses to go to a Canadian team. Don't know why people thought that would work. I do think that was part of the equation, it got to him. From there it was a circle. Team's doing bad, so more media, more media, so Torts flips out more, Torts flips out more, team does even worse.
But I do think the game has passed him by as well. Yes he was a good coach at one point, but I think he's too old school now. The Keenan comparison was apt. Successful, but not able to keep up with changing times. And similar personalities and styles. Maybe it's the personality that causes that, sorta unwilling to change or turn the lens on oneself.
Look at Hartley. I wrote him off before he came to Calgary. Thought he was successful in the past, but that was a long time ago under very different circumstances. He was able to bounce back. But he admitted, he had to learn and change. He says he's always learning and adjusting. Torts, I don't really see that from him. Too much ego. Maybe he'll change one day. But for now, I think any team that hires him would be making a big mistake. Double for a Canadian team.
