He is a great coach, but 8 years? Wow. That's a long time for a coach contract.

I thought they were saying Buffalo? The media had written off the idea that he would come to Toronto, so this is a huge shock. That is insane money for a coach who probably won't last his term.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
To reset: Babcock to TOR. Eight-year deal, but there may be an "out" after five. Full value is approx $50M, but front loaded....

Wow that's nuts. Good for him though.

This makes me glad I don't have cable anymore so I don't have to be subject to even more of the TO Show.

Even if an out, would still be guaranteed money for 5.
Front end loaded? So I bet 40M guaranteed

If any team can bring the mighty Mike Babcock down a few pegs it is the Leafs. He's going to find out that there's a lot more to coaching the Leafs than simply managing the players. Every single move is second guessed and openly questioned by fans and media. If things don't go as planned he will get the same treatment that Wilson and Carlyle got and things will go south fast when things go bad. Should have gone to Buffalo where he would have had an opportunity to bring a young and talented team along slowly.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Babcock's salary in first three years of his eight-year deal is believed to be as much as $8M per year.

Unless he got total player control, like he wanted.

If he has that, I can see him being happy.

Come on dude. You don't become one of the best in the world in your field, if that's the kind of attitude you bring to the table.
Babcock will work just as hard there as he would anywhere else.

24 million in the first three years. There's no CBA restriction on how front loaded coaches salaries can be be I assume.
