Icon38 Flyers sign KHL star D Yevgeni Medvedev (1yr, $3mil)

Philadelphia Flyers @NHLFlyers
Breaking: The #Flyers have signed free agent defenseman Yevgeni Medvedev

Quote:
The Philadelphia Flyers have signed 6-3, 187 lb free-agent defenseman Yevgeni Medvedev, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Medvedev, 32 (8/27/1982), is a native of Chelyabinsk, Russia. He comes to North America for the first time after a long professional career in his home country. He has played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) since its inception in 2008 and spent three seasons prior to that playing in the KHL’s predecessor, the Russian Elite League.
Was just announced today he terminated his KHL contract. First big name Russian to leave the KHL, perhaps more to follow. Been a fixture on the Russian olympic and international teams for ahile now.

As long as it's not the blackhawks.

Flyers media already speculating Hextall will move his surplus d-men for picks

Sam Carchidi @BroadStBull
Hexy is going to have to get rid of a handful of Dmen. Looking for draft picks, obviously.

I expected them to sign Zaitsev, surprised that a guy with that much KHL experience would try North America but props to him for taking the risk

I wouldn't mind Gudas if they look at moving him.

Thought he looked good early in the year in Tampa.

Anyone worth targeting?

I don't think Schenn is useful anymore, is he?

Ya I really don't understand how this is possible. If he was 17 years old maybe, but he's 32?!?! Must be a mistake.

Same, but I have my doubts they would considering his contract and abilities. He is one that they likely want to keep.

I could see the Flames being interested in Schenn and Grossman.

32 years old? Awesome... must be quite a thrill to get a chance in the NHL at that age.

No more borscht and cabbage rolls for him! Steak and beer is the way to go.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The #flyers clearly believe in 32-year-old Russian defenceman Yevgeni Medvedev. He received a $3M, one-year deal.

Andrew MacDonald might be a cheap acquisition off the Flyers. He does make quite a bit and hasn't played well for the Flyers, but he was very good for the Islanders. Perhaps a change of scenery might help him?

People liked Andrew Macdonald at 500k. Now that he gets 5 mil no one will want him. This signing probably pushes him out of their top 6... and their backend is a mess

It's a one year deal on a team with #### defense, there's really no downside to it.
