For those people who will only buy a single set of wheels, what's the harm in just buying Winter Tires and using them all year long?
(just that they won't perform as well in the heat, and they will break down faster, and have a shorter life?)

Their life isn't even shortened as much in heat as they were even a few years ago. Unless you do lots of highway driving, or are really concerned about handling, you'll have no issues. Even these so called "all weather" tires are real winter tires Just renamed and marketed differently. That said yes they'll wear faster.
Keep in mind as well though that winter tires won't stop as fast as dedicated summer tires in the middle of summer. Not a huge difference but enough to effect performance drivers.
And also if you have two sets of tires You're effectively doubling the life of each set since you're using them half as much.

I use cheap winter tires year round. They last me 3 years before the tread gets to a point where I'd like to replace them. You could use them longer, but it would be sketchy in standing water or winter.
The wear in summer is negligible. I also corner pretty hard in my car.

First off, my apologies for bumping this thread :*(
Winter is NOT here yet but as we have recently acquired an 08 Yaris I want to get an early jump on getting some good winter tires for it.
My 05 Mazda 3 has be using Blizzak ws70's for the past few winters and they have certainly got the job done. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find something similar for the Yaris but thought I'd check here first to see if anyone has some suggestions on what's worked well on their Yaris?
On the advice of a user here, I bought some Continental Extreme Contact DW summer tires which have turned out to be pretty darn good, do they make an equally as good winter tire? The price to buy the summers was very reasonable.

I have extreme winter contacts, been very happy with them. Bought them for their dry weather performance since we don't get that much snow in calgary.

Me too man, me too. But like I said, just getting an early start, HATE getting caught unprepared.

Got my tires and rims already ordered, they arrived today. Probably going to throw them on sometime between Thanksgiving and Halloween, depending on the weather of course.

Got to pick up a set of winter tires for my mom's new Rav4. I really wish Costco sold steelies too, it'd make it so much easier. Now I'll probably have to get her first set of winter tires from somewhere else.

I thought the point of a Yaris was if the snow got too deep you could pick it up and carry it to your destination.

Yeah, I'm in the market, too. The exchange rate makes Tire Rack unappealing compared to the last time I bought tires/wheels. I've never bought from Costco...maybe I'll check that out.

I have had good experience with Costco, both price point and service.

to me the whole lining up at costco to maybe get some tires seems like a waste of a day - i'd rather just go somewhere else and drop my rig off in the morning and pick up up at 5 pm. even if it costs a couple of hundred more than costco.....

I know that they've been plugged previously, but Urban Expressions never disappoints. I've gone there a few times, and referred my folks there as well. Plus, they do appointments and would probably be happy to have your car there all day if you wanted to leave it.
