Obviously this has more to do with Ray Rice and whatnot, but it still absolutely shocks me that nothing was done with Varlamov last year.

Why? I'm not on board with this. Suspended until proven guilty seems like a terrible way to proceed. Varlamov was exonerated

IIRC, wasn't it found out that his gf was insane? I remember reading she pressed charges against him after he stopped giving her his credit card or something like that.
What happened in court regarding Varlamov?

She was blackmailing him. Imagine if he was suspended over this?

Yeah, the suspension is pretty clearly a direct result of the NFL situation and not wanting to be caught up in that. However, it is really quite interesting that the NHL had the foresight to have such powers written into the CBA. That is a stark contrast to the NFL making it up on the fly.

He is suspended with pay, so he is not making a financial loss whilst he is waiting to be tried. Handled swiftly, before a media circus could commence ala NFL.

Suspended NHL players count against the salary cap. The #LAKings now have less than $500,000 in free space with six active defencemen.

I am told the facts and circumstances of the Voynov case differ from those of Varlamov case. I don't know more than that.
One thing about the Varlamov case was almost immediately the Avalanche said their investigation exonerated Varlamov

Then that's reasonable. I just don't want to see a knee jerk reaction here

So, what are their options here? Just go with 6 defencemen and hope nobody gets hurt?

That is one option... other option is to send one of Tofolli, Pearson or Andreoff to the AHL and recall a dman, but with the way Tofolli and Pearson are playing makes little sense.

He's a guy they like apparently and is subject to waivers. Not a great option either.

Yeah, there must be more to the story. If it was just an allegation then I don't think the NHL would be suspending him so quickly. There must be some factual details that the press doesn't have yet.

Not really - he is in a very bad situation, and the issue is obviously very sensitive at this point in time.
He's still being paid, so the focus should be on clearing his name, if that's at all possible. And if it's not, #### him.

I have no problems at all with the league immediately suspending players - with pay - who get arrested on violent crime charges.
Send them home, wait to get the facts in hand, then decide if there should be further punitive action taken or not.

Didn't realize he was getting paid and it appears that the league did wait for some facts. Two things I was not aware of when that was written
