Default National Park Pass (2 year deal for 1 year price)

Seems like a pretty good deal.

http://calgaryherald.com/news/local-...lid-until-2018

Quote:
If you buy an annual pass for Canada’s national parks and historic sites this year, it won’t expire for two years.

That’s because the federal government has made entry into the national parks free in 2017 for the 150th anniversary of the country’s Confederation.

No one from Parks Canada responded to a request for an interview Monday, but a spokeswoman emailed a statement.

“As a first step towards celebrating Canada150, Discovery Passes for 2016 will be valid for 24 months, rather than 12 months,” wrote Parks Canada’s Natalie Fay. “All Parks Canada Discovery Passes purchased in 2016 will be valid for 24 months from the date of purchase.

“The passes will incorporate the purchase of one year’s admission and free admission to Parks Canada places in 2017.”

It means an annual pass bought today would be valid until January 2018, rather than January 2017.

Awesome! I pretty much always buy a pass and love a trip into the parks we have nearby.

This is a funny way to a spin it.

Its one year for the price of one year. Seems like everyone gets the free year whether they buy a 2016 pass or not, no?

Im guessing they probably want to protect cash flow. They dont want people to not buy a pass until 2017. Also, from a renewal point of view, you want to keep people (donors) buying year after year. If they take a year off it takes them out of the cycle and renewal rates will drop.

A better deal would be to not go this year and wait until 2017 and go for free.

I never understood this from Trudeau, one trip to Banff tells you the $10/ day does not keep anyone away and is a pretty good deal. A day pass to a park is the one of the best values going. I wonder how much money this will cost the Parks,er Government, er tax payers.

No. If you don't buy the 2016 pass, you would need to buy one in 2017 for full price, I would assume.

But why would you need to buy one in 2017 when it's already free to everyone is what he is saying I believe.

Nope. The Parks Canada website clearly says it is free for everyone in 2017.

They just want to spin it so people think that they need to buy a 2016 pass.

so are all the toll booth people just laid off for all of 2017? this would affect 1000's of jobs nationally right?

Yeah everyone gets 2017 for free, but this just confirms that if you buy a pass through 2016 that your year gets extended into 2018. So if I renew mine whenever that date is (say July) then its good to July 2018. Usually it would be July 2017. Of course you're not really gaining anything here, but you're not losing anything either.

I have a buddy still using a residence pass fro the 90's(it's monotone red on cardboard) and he has never got stopped. Goes through the Sunshine road check all the time, too.

Wow it's 150 years already. The Centennial only seems like only yesterday...Well okay I wasn't even born for quite a long shot but there never seemed to be any shortage of Confederation Parks, Centennial Arenas, etc. whilst growing up.

So 2017 is free for everyone?

Because I bought my new one on the 17th of December not knowing about this and will be livid if I have to pay for 2017 because i bought mine 2 weeks early.
