"If we just legalized marijuana across the country, then people wouldn't care so much when kids got shot" -Anthony Jeselnik

Don't know how a culture that by and large doesn't trust anyone with cannabis can turn around and trust those same citizens to use the proper discretion when it comes to deadly force.

Sure she could have, and Adam could have as well if he went through the normal procedure.

Only difference is the magazine capacity, and a 30 round clip isn't that hard to get in Canada if you know where to look.

The Texas economy is booming with great unemployment levels. Surely that doesn't have anything to do with it.

You hit the nail on the head IMO.

The French own a lot of guns actually.

Spoiler!

Your chart is off by 20,,000 deaths though, in 2007 31,244 deaths by firearm were recorded, which is about average, the 10,000 figure is likely taken from murders by firearm, which is also generally at around 10,000 per year.

I suppose they thought a massive circle of 30,000 wouldn't leave room for anything else, like the 'we're not as bad as Jamaica and a couple of other third world crap holes' comment.

Yes and I disagree. The reason you say what you say is because the way it was intended to be presented worked. There are patterns of an agenda from both sides. Why people are so eager to draw lines in the sand and start calling everything black and white is why this gets so ridiculous.

He didn't say the French don't have many guns, he asked why they don't feel the need to own guns, which is more of a sociological question than anything else.

Gun laws in France are really quite restrictive compared to the United States. Ammo types are restricted and you may only possess a certain amount of it, you need to obtain a licence for your gun(s) and have it renewed every few years, you may only have a certain number of guns of a certain type, you are subject to background checks (criminal, mental, health), you can't carry anywhere in the country without special permit, proper storage of the weapons is regulated by law, etc.

Obviously, gun control, ownership, and the reasons for ownership are quite a bit different between the two countries, and I highly doubt many in France would say their reason for having a gun is an insurance policy in case of the return of the Ancien Régime.

Bump
Ongoing standoff in Alabama with a "Survivalist" taking a young boy hostage in his survival bunker.

Quote:
More than three days after he allegedly shot dead a school bus driver, grabbed a five-year-old child and slipped into an underground bunker in the rural U.S., Jimmy Lee Dykes was showing no signs Friday of turning himself over to police.
Hostage negotiators spoke into a narrow ventilation pipe leading into the bunker, trying to talk the 65-year-old, said to hold anti-government views, into freeing the boy.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2...man-day-3.html
I didn't bump this thread because I was thinking of gun control, mental illness, or that it was a mass shooting (it wasn't), but just thinking about how this is a nightmare for police.
Unlike a building where police can get in through a number of ways, the bunker has supplies and fortified that the suspect can be there for awhile, and there isn't a lot the police can do.

Anyone want to speculate the death toll if a gun was used instead?

Cue the 'All of it could have been prevented by one person with a gun' argument

I saw an interview with the Alabama crazy's neighbors the other day. He's shot at people, shot at cars, killed the neighbors dog with a lead pipe, I think maybe another one with a shovel. Spends all of his time patrolling his fence line and digging his bunker.
The Sheriff has been out to his place but can't take away his guns because of his second amendment rights.
It's unbelievable the kind of people they allow to have firearms.

Wow, I'm curious how they pulled that off. The Russians could take some lessons on hostage rescue from them...

Time for people to go and get more guns as this is just proof that the tyrannical govt is coming to take them away.

Sliiiiight difference between one man and one hostage and three dozen armed men with over a thousand hostages.

Though that is not to say that the Russians handled Beslan crisis but poorly.

As long as all the terrorists are dead, Russians consider the operation a huge success.
