Yes, I had been typing in a destination. Currently show one car in New Brighton, and that's it.

How many taxis do you think are hanging out in New Brighton?

I think you were missing my point. There was one Uber car available for the entire city- and I mentioned where it was at the time. If there is a shortage of vehicles available, that makes the service unreliable. I hope 4x4 is right that the numbers will increase. However the reason I supported Uber was due to issues with taxis not being available when needed.

I think I'm going to look into being an uber driver during the day after I take my kid to school. When my wife is in town, I could also do rush hour. Not sure how to start, but am going to look into it. I'm not doing much over the winter anyways. I have a truck with a canopy. I wonder if that would be something people would like. To have the option to bring a bike to work, and commute home or the other way around. Is that something I could advertise on the app?

Sort of, but not really. You can advertise the make and model of your vehicle and potential customers are able to select you based upon that. For example, when selecting a driver, customers will be able to see that you are driving a Ford F-150. I can't think of a way for you to add comments like "I can carry your bike in my truck" to your profile though.

You may want to spend some time on uberpeople.net before investing in this idea(because you will have to lay out some cash to get started). I can't imagine paying gas for a truck is going to make it all that profitable.

That is an innuendo that might attract some interesting clientele

How does this select your driver thing work? I remember people saying only take a driver with 5 stars, etc. However, when I tried Uber, a grand total of 2 times in LA, I just put in my address, confirmed I wanted a ride and was told "Joe Smith" is coming to pick you up in his Toyota Corolla (or whatever). At no point did I see an option to choose a driver or type of vehicle (outside of the Uber X, Large, etc. options).

I'd imagine it'll be where you cancel the request if you don't like the driver; wait a few minutes and try again.

But don't you get charged a cancellation fee if you do that?

If you do it quick enough, it won't apply. Usually you have a 5 minute window after making a request to cancel.

Uber is reporting no cars downtown. Kind of a lumpy reboot.

To be an Uber driver in Calgary you need to change your license plate to a J-##### style, have a better drivers license than class 5. Or class 5 with a police background check I believe. And then have an insurance company that will insure you for being an Uber driver. And then submit your drivers abstract + vehicle inspection report to Uber for approval.
I don't think many people are going to be Uber drivers after learning how hard it really is to become one.

Well I imagine free market will sort that out in time. If not many people are drivers, theoretically more money to be made for the drivers, so incentives (and surge profits) are higher for drivers, leading to more drivers willing to go through all those hoops.

I had a cab scheduled to pick me up 35 minutes ago and not showing up. Guess that can be expected on a Saturday with Christmas parties and Flames game and such, but I can't even get through their phone line to cancel the pick up. Too bad Uber is still jammed this early on.

I tried to use it after the game and got one right away to the dome. Fall down was that the guy was a meat head and asked me to meet him at Cowboys Casino instead due to traffic. So I walked over and then he called saying I needed to walk back to the dome.
Said eff that, cancelled and got a cab right away. So no problem with getting one but thedriver I got was a bit of a tool.

Seems like a pretty rough re-launch. I've tried 3 times and each time there are no cars available near DT or in the West end of town. Just tried again now, random Sunday at 330pm and there are no cars available for my trip...
