Yeah, those outcomes were largely predictable. They shouldn't even have an awards show at this point, just announce the winners in a release.

Hong Kong produced a golden generation in the 80s and 90s that is really just being appreciated now.

Good lord.
No, I think EEAAO will win most of those. Fraser will win. Blanchett probably should win best actress, but won't for obvious reasons. Hopefully Kerry Condon wins, she stole that movie for me.
|
I must have missed this. What is the obvious reason against Blanchett?

My guess is that she has already won 2 Oscars ?
I thought EEAAO was just ok. Touching story and some entertaining moments, just felt to self aware in trying to be weird. Top movies of the year for me were Triangle of Sadness, Babylon, All Quiet On The Western Front and Tar, with Babylon probably being my favorite movie of the year.

They want a good story - same reason Fraser was a lock. As you say, Blanchett has already won two Oscars, and if they can give Yeoh one and say "look, it's the first woman of colour to win since 2003, we even had Halle Berry give it to her" it's a thing for people to tweet about. Which isn't to suggest Yeoh's performance wasn't Oscar-worthy in its own right - it was just a fait accompli.
Anyway, I think what we can all take away from this evening is the amazing and powerful message that no one person is more important than profits.

I enjoyed EEAAO but don't get the hype or sweeping the Oscars. Fun concept but dragged out too long and anti-climactic. I liked Top Gun more.

Jimmy Kimmel's interaction with Malala Yousafzai was an absolute embarrassment. Lady Gaga has a bunch of empty platitudes about being a hero meanwhile they treat an actual real life hero to jokes about spitting and put a cocaine bear in her face. What a clown.

Aren’t the awards decided by member voting?

But there's definitely a narrative that takes hold. I wouldn't say Blanchette not winning was "obvious" but there was a narrative that had momentum and it was hard to change the tide.

I'll remember and re-watch Top Gun for years, It took me 2 pauses over 3 days to get thru EEAAO, it was ok but I'll never watch it again.
I doubt I'm alone in thinking the best picture should be one that lasts.

I didn’t think Everything was that amazing, still enjoyed it though. I’d rather see a movie like that win than another sleepy Oscar-bait drama.

Agreed, I haven't re-watched an Oscar winner since Argo(2013), No Country for Old Men(2008), Gladiator(2001) and Titanic(1998)
21 of 25 years of "meh"
edit, looking back, the years prior had some great picks, so it's pretty much the last 25 years that they pick dull duds.

You know what they say. No accounting for taste.
Many people, me included, will not watch Top Gun for many years to come.
planes flying around. big wooo.
I'll probably remember it more for the misogyny in not bringing back Kelly McGillis somehow.
Can't have an old woman who aged normally in the show now can we.

I wouldn't necessarily call it misogyny not to bring her back but sometimes one has to face facts, her role in the first film was to be a sexy co-star love interest to Maverick.
I'm not sure what role you could write her into the script this time around.

For me it was maybe a 6.5/10 movie at best as it's an interesting concept that to me was stretched far too thin as it's at least 30 minutes overcooked. It's one of those movies that's not for everyone but the people that liked it, LOVED it and started a bit of a cult following that kept gaining momentum. I actually liked Top Gun more but I don't know if from top to bottom it's an Oscar caliber movie. Anyway good to see A24 going strong.

I think Top Gun could have had a quick throw away scene or line for McGillis. Something along the lines that her consulting has put her up even higher in the government, and just like Iceman she is somewhat of a guardian angel for Maverick.

Same type of member voting that got and might get again a Trump win for the GOP, all a bunch of BS.
