According to all the ACI's I've watched it should be really really easy to figure out whether it was a missile or not.
The fact that they've found debris in a 15km radius does support an in-flight breakup over hitting the ground intact.
I hope looters don't make off with key evidence.

CNN is reporting that looters are already going through the debris. Pretty ####ed up.

Absolutely heartbreaking.
If those reporters have confirmed the rebels in the area had control over that system, I think priority one should be to retrieve it and see if it can be traced back to the Russian government. The deaths of these people cannot be overlooked by the international community. Pressure should then be placed on the Russians to end their support for the insurgents and start cleaning up the mess they made.

The outcome of the investigation will probably depend on who takes control of the crash site. Russians will probably get in there and try to wash away any evidence that would implicate them.

I've been trying to find out if more flights from Amsterdam/Schiphol airport left for Kuala Lumpur today.
Unfortunately there was only one flight for Kuala Lumpur today.
It was a combined flight of Malaysian Airlines (MH 17) and KLM (KL 4103)
There is a flight scheduled to leave at 9 p.m. (Dutch time. That is -8 hours for Calgary time)
It's a combined flight of:
Malaysian Airlines (MH 5631)
KLM (KL 0809)
Air France (AF 8399)
I hope it helps you out a bit and I hope your cousin is okay.
(excuse my English)

I was able to contact my cousin (his sister). He actually flew back yesterday. I was under the impression he was flying today due to the fact that he was suppose to meet my parents, who flew to europe yesterday. So he's ok, and home. So relieved...
But I feel sick for the families that will have to deal with this tragedy. For a moment there I had this horrible knot in the stomach, wondering what had happened to my cousin, but those families will not get the relief I did. I truly feel horrible for them.

So very sad. Not even sure what to say.
This will only further ignite the conflict, and the fact it now truly has become an International incident, will escalate everything further.
RIP

No matter what happens it traces back to the Russians, they manufacture the various missiles and the vehicles themselves. I know that the Chinese manufacture their own version and the Iranians have a knockoff as well.
What's difficult to prove is were the missiles and vehicles sold or "loaned" to the separatists or stolen from the Ukraine military or from a Russian warehouse.
Right now the conspiracy theorist in me is probably thinking that Russia is going to manufacture a stolen weapons report from some Western Russian arms warehouse and some poor gomer in their military is going to be charged with corruption.

He took and posted a picture of the plane that was shot down, that he was a passenger on, and said "if it disappears, this is how it looks like"

About 4 months ago, a Malaysian Airlines plane disappeared and the wreckage has never been found.
I think the guy was just making a joke on Facebook because he was flying on Malaysian Airlines (it looks like he took it just before boarding).

Good news. I wonder how he feels ... same flight the day later goes down? Lottery ticket, he needs to buy one.

Translation
I will translate:
"We just shot down An-26 (note:ukrainian transport plane used by military) near the city of Torez, the debris is lying somewhere close to the coal-mine "Progress. "
We have warned before not to fly in "our sky."
And here is the video confirmation.
The plane fell behind a spoil tip, the residential sector is not caught. Civilians are not injured.
Edit:
P.S. This screen is from a known social page where Strelkov boasts of his "achievments" in a war agianst Ukrainian army.
This if from an hour ago.
Mistaken identity ?
