dissentowner now has surprised me twice. Once with the actual pronunciation of his username, and now with his love and knowledge of spiders. I think he deserves a custom user title.

It could be. Just going by what the family thought the spider was. Either way, it's a scary spider in Canada even if it's not native. They are here now, we have them on V.I. as well.

it could be a Brazilian wandering spider, whose venom gives male victims a painful four-hour erection before killing them.

First black widow I've seen I almost #### my pants.. Now I've killed so many of them that they're like Ants to me.

Same with Scorpions, our last place had at least 3 a week in the garage. New place thank allah is Scorp free but have to keep a lookout.

It's the #1 thing I hate about living here.

Another unknown dissentowner fact. I was arachnophobic as a child. I bought my first tarantula when I was 16 to try and get over my fear of spiders, my dad had to feed it for the first couple months. Eventually I started feeding it and moved its enclosure into my room. Then I worked up the nerve to pick it up and it was docile. I started becoming obsessed with tarantulas and spiders and by the time I was 19 I had over 30 different species of tarantula. I started breeding and selling them although today I only have 5 different species. I was the first person in Canada that I know of to successfully breed Poecilotheria metallica as far as I know and still have a female, my favourite spider.

I have been bit by 3 different species, the worst being Haplopelma Lividum or Colbalt Blue by common name, nastiest spider I have ever dealt with.

We have had to kill the tarantulas at the place I'm renting in Costa Rica. At first it was catch and release, but with 5 kids running around it's now death by broom. I feel really bad, but my 2 yr old wants to pick them up.

Killed 3 last night. Death count currently at 8 or 9 the last 7 days.

I would be happy to come and visit and safely remove your tarantula visitors for free room and board in Costa Rica

[Scratches Costa Rica off list of places to ever visit.]

They really are fascinating little creatures. They don't bother me at all, but the curious toddler and the petrified mom kind of sealed their fate.

Pretty gross to clean up the aftermath.

One of the funniest videos I've ever watched, especially the bit about the wandering spider (starts at 5:18)...

Do spiders really eat enough bugs to justify their existence though?

Yeah, I don't get the 'they eat bugs' defence. Bugs that irritate me, ranked from highest to lowest:
  • Mosquitoes
  • Wasps
  • Spiders
  • Various terrestrial bugs that spiders eat

So unless spiders are eating mosquitoes and wasps, I don't see how I get anything out of their bug-eating ways.

You obviously don't have a garden or at least aren't in charge. Beneficial insects like spiders can make a big difference on whether your veggies get eaten by you or something else.

No chance I'm watching that. Spiders can exist in the wild, but unless it can be proven to me that they do wonders in my house or yard, they don't get a free pass from me.

I have seen loads of black widows in the Okanagan. Doesn't seem a rare spider there.
