Icon48 Bettman says crackdown on slashing next season

Frank Seravalli @frank_seravalli
Bettman says plan is to have more strict interpretation on slashing next year. #NHL is concerned about injuries. More discussion this summer

You mean breaking a hand is more severe than breaking a stick and should be penalized? You don't say Mr. Bettman..

I don't think the problem is the current interpretation of slashing. It's that the refs don't see it or they don't call it consistently. Change the interpretation all you want, but until the refs call it, it is meaningless.

That is why I say fine each player for every slash after the fact whether it is call a penalty or not. Treat it like diving.

Yes. Great move if they follow through.

Slashing is the new hooking/holding, and the last crack down worked really well.

I don't watch hockey to see the skilled and talented players get slashed over and over. I want to see nice plays made, not Johnny Gaudreau (as an example) with a broken finger.

'Tapping' needs to go.

I'm sceptical to the point of pessimism, but I guess something is better than nothing here.

Great, more excuses to give the Oilers power plays while completely ignoring the rules for other teams.

They'll call it tight for 4-5 weeks until they relapse to the typical NHL standard.

Great, now they need to educate the Ref's to actually call the slashes.

Got to hand it to McDiver. He is already practicing right now for the refs.

They'll call it tight for a few weeks and then it will begin to slide.

By the time playoffs begin, the rule book will be thrown out the window as usual.

Not too confident in the NHL/refs' ability to consisenty enforce this but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

I'll believe it when I see it called consistently after November of this season.
