Was there any details about the business dealings that caused the grudge with Alvin Likness?
I feel sorry for the kid getting caught up in this.

Patti Garland deserves some kind of medal of honour for informing the police so quickly. If that meticulous psychopath had any extra time, he would have gotten rid of all the DNA evidence at the farm.

This is a really good point. It took some kind of courage to call the police. I don't know what their relationship was or if she sensed he was a monster but still, to call the police on your brother is a tough one and should be acknowledged, if only here.

I seem to recall they didn't have much of a relationship, and what was there was pretty strained and not really close at all.

A sad ending to the #Garland trial. Greg Head, a friend of the O'Briens - just punched a photographer in the face and threatened others.

Depends what was said to the O'Briens I suppose - might have gotten a little too close for comfort.

Really too bad he couldn't have just held back and moved on. I totally get that we can't put ourselves in the headspace of a family member leaving the emotional case, but he really screwed himself over badly with that punch and outburst.

Just for the sake of interest, here is the original thread if anybody wants to read how things played out in the initial days after the family's disappearance.

Yeah or the other option is that the photographer gives them some space during a highly emotional time.

The family member was not presented with that option. Sorry if it came off as defending the media member, just saying for the family's sake I wish he could have found a way to hold back and just walk away.

This is going to make a pretty crazy movie one day. I've been watching dateline for years and have never seen a case like this.
Don't doubt they'll be all over this story. Meth dealer, kicked out of med school, stolen identities, fugitive, murderer, scumbag. Just a crazy story all around.

This past November I had dealings with the media as it related to a friend/co-worker murder.
I have no sympathy for the media. I honestly think they don't give a ####, at least that was my experience.

Given the media is rarely noted for its tact, I'm wondering what the photographer said or did to cause that reaction.

I wasn't expressing sympathy for the media, I was expressing sympathy for him. Maybe my words were poor, I meant I wished he had held back for his sake and the trouble this will bring him, not so the guy didn't get punched.

Quote:
Court of Queen’s Bench Justice David Gates agreed with Crown prosecutor Shane Parker the convicted killer’s actions warranted consecutive periods of parole ineligibility.
"It is difficult to conceive a more cunning, cruel and horrific set of circumstances of assault, abduction, torture and murder," Gates said, after asking Garland if he wished to speak and being told he did not.
"Mr. Garland, you have done a terrible thing, the horror and the terror that you visited upon on these three innocent people extends almost beyond the boundaries of ordinary human comprehension.
"The circumstances defy description."
Parker had a more succinct description of Garland’s crime.
"It’s evil," he said.
"These acts, the Crown would submit, display a character of evil," Parker said, in seeking the harshest sentence available for Garland under Canadian law
"Each victim was apparently murdered for a slightly different purpose," the prosecutor said.
"This was ... a brutal crime of stark horror," he said.
"You not only have death, you have torture, inhuman behaviour."

I don't know if Garland will feel compelled to write a tell-all with all the free time that he will have but I think it would be interesting to hear his entire story and what went down.
