That would be like 300 points in the Gretzky era?

For perspective: Gretzky scored 205 points in 1985. That same year Mark Messier was #12 in NHL scoring with 101 points—that is twelve players over 100 points in a single season. The #12 scorer from this season was Blake Wheeler with 74 points.

I don't believe there will ever be another 200-point player. The problem is not just that the game has changed so dramatically to favour defense, it is also that the gap between the best and average players is much, MUCH more narrow.

Never say never I guess. At some point, scoring will creep back into the game but the skills gap has likely narrowed permanently.

Still Gretzky doubled the #12 scorer that year. That would have been 150 points last year. Maybe possible?

jfc commentators are losing their minds. Do they even know that the last phenom talent, the one who just won his third cup, outscored McDavid by 20 points in their respective sophomore seasons? And that looks to be the highest point total of Crosbys career. I'm sure McDavid will outdo his sophmore season at some point, and perhaps multiple times, but he isn't even the most impressive 'generational' talent playing in the league let alone going to break some godly number like 200.

Before his season ended with a concussion at the Winter Classic, it looked like Crosby could have scored 150 in 2010-11.

He was on pace for 132. Pretty big jump to 150 from there. 84 points in 41 games.

That would put him on pace for 168 points?

I think there is no limit to what Connor can do in the regular season, that is when he is at his best. Like Reggie Jackson, he is a real Mr. October.

Was on a flight to Phoenix and surrounded by Oiler fans from Red Deer. When the plan touched down one of the boneheads checked his phone and announced to his buddies that Eberle had been traded for Strome. They were high fiving and busy chattering about how great Dylan Strome was going to be for the Oilers and how stupid Phoenix was for making that deal. I popped their balloon by telling them it was the Islanders they had made the trade with, and that it was Ryan Strome. Jubilation turned to confusion, which turned to anger. It was great getting off that plane knowing I had started off the vacation for a bunch of Oiler fans off on the wrong foot.

And goaltenders are significantly better.

Also, McDavid lead the Oilers in scoring with 100 points, Eberle was third with 51. Thats a pretty sheer drop.

Looks like he would have had 66 pts in his first 41, so 84 in last 41 = 150 pts.

Goaltending is far better. There is greater depth on each team because we are actually getting good europeans and there's no more Iron Curtain. Coaches and systems are far better then the Gretzky era, and players are just flat out better skating wise. Instead of facing a team with 2 decent lines and 3 decent defensemen and two lines filled with tough guys and bad skaters and 3 defensemen who can't skate backwards. You are facing a line where all 18 skaters are very good.

Hell even Gretzky wouldn't get 200 points in this era.
